Cal Rallies For 5-4 Win In 10 Innings Against Baseball

April 14, 2001

BERKELEY, Calif. - Designated hitter Brad Smith hit the game-winning RBI single to right in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday and the California Golden Bears averted the series sweep with a 5-4 win against the No. 9 USC Trojans in Pac-10 action at Evans Diamond. The loss drops the Trojans (26-13, 8-4 Pac-10) two games behind first-place Stanford in conference play. USC will host the top-ranked Cardinal next weekend at Dedeaux Field.

The Golden Bears (22-18, 7-8) rallied from a 4-1 deficit by scoring a single run in the final four innings. David Cash (8-2) pitched five scoreless innings in relief to register the victory for Cal.

Cal tied the game in the ninth on a bases loaded walk by USC pitcher Brian Bannister, who relieved starter Anthony Reyes. Reyes was two outs away from his first career complete game, but still registered one of his better performances of the season (8 1/3 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO).

With one out in the 10th, Carson White doubled to left for the Golden Bears off Fraser Dizard (2-3). Clint Hoover was intentionally walked and pinch-hitter Chris Grossman walked to load the bases. With the infield in for the Trojans, Smith hit a high chopper that bounced off second baseman Jon Brewster's glove into right field for the game-winner.

USC opened the game with three runs off Cal starter Ryan Atkinson. Anthony Lunetta scored Brian Barre with a double down the left field line, Bill Peavey hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Seth Davidson and Alberto Concepcion hit a single to center to plate Lunetta.

Cal had runners at first and second with one out and a run in, but Reyes retired the next two batters to end the threat.

Freshman third baseman Michael Moon hit his second home run of the season with a solo bomb to right, giving the Trojans the 4-1 lead before the Golden Bears' comeback.

The Trojans will return to action on Tuesday (April 17) at UC Riverside at 6 p.m. USC will begin its series with Stanford on Friday (April 20) at 6 p.m. with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (April 21) and Sunday (April 22). All games will be broadcast live on
