Oregon Drops Both Games Of Doubleheader To No. 16 Oregon State

EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball team (25-26 overall, 1-7 Pac-10) lost both games of a doubleheader to No. 16 Oregon State in front of 504 fans at Howe Field Saturday. The Beavers shutout Oregon 8-0 in Game 1 and took the second game 11-2. Oregon State improves to 32-15-1, 2-4 Pac-10.

'We made a lot of mental mistakes and weren't able to get our offense going,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'Oregon State played well all around and we just weren't able to limit our mistakes.'

Oregon State pitcher Crystal Draper improved to 18-8 on the season with the win in Game 1. Draper gave up just two hits and had eight strike outs in seven innings pitched. Sophomore Lisa Wangler (5-7) took the loss for Oregon.

Both teams remained scoreless through two innings, but in the top of the third inning Oregon State's offense exploded for seven runs. The Beavers had five hits in the inning, including a two-run RBI by Steph Adams and capitalized on three Oregon errors.

Oregon State went scoreless in the next three innings and scored its final run on an RBI single by Traci Feldt in the top of the seventh. Feldt finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Centerfielder Brooke Rutschman led all batters, finishing the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Wangler and junior Missy Coe accounted for Oregon's lone hits.

In the second game Oregon took the early lead in the bottom of the first. Wangler singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lynsey Haij. Sophomore Alyssa Laux grounded out to first base and Wangler advanced to third on the play. Coe singled up the middle to score Wangler to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

Oregon State responded in the top of the second, scoring four runs on three hits. Catcher Shelly Prochaska started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Brynnen Guthrie. Prochaska stole home to start the scoring rally. Rutschman capped the inning with a two-run home run over the center field fence.

The Beavers extended their lead in the third, scoring three more runs to go ahead 7-1. Oregon scored in the fourth when sophomore Andrea Vidlund hit her sixth home run of the season.

Oregon State scored four more runs in the sixth to get the win. Monica Hoffman (12-7) picked up the win for Oregon State.

Oregon resumes Pac-10 play Friday when it hosts Washington at 2 p.m.
