Women's Basketball Celebrates At Year-End Banquet

SEATTLE, Wash. - Senior teammates Jill Pimley and Sarah Duncan wereco-recipients of the Coaches' Award for all-around contribution to the team,on the court and off, at the annual Husky women's basketball awards banquetat the Don James Center on the University of Washington campus Monday night.The pair helped lead Washington to a share of the Pac-10 championship and anappearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Duncan was honored as the team's most inspirational player for the secondyear in a row while Pimley was also named Outstanding Defensive Playeragain. Pimley shared the defensive honor this season with senior LeAnnSheets, the Huskies' top rebounder.
Freshman guard Giuliana Mendiola, who started all but two games and finishedas the third-leading scorer on the team, earned the Big Dawg award, an honorthat is tallied throughout the season for on-court performance. Mendiolaaveraged 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game en route to be honored on thePac-10 All-Freshman Team.
Fellow freshman Andrea Lalum, who moved into the starting lineup duringPac-10 play, was named Most Improved Player. She averaged 9.4 points and 5.3rebounds while shooting a team-high 47 percent from the field in her firstyear of collegiate action. Lalum was recognized on the Pac-10 freshmanhonorable mention squad.
Senior Carli Halpenny, who is in Rome, Italy studying for a quarter, washonored as the 101 Club's Outstanding Scholar and the Tyee Sports CouncilCommunity Service recipient. Halpenny, who was one of 25 UW studentsselected to study abroad this quarter, carries a 3.75 grade point average inzoology.
Mendiola and senior tri-captain Megan Franza earned the Lion's Club Assisttrophy. Mendiola passed out 126 assists in 32 games this year, while Franzahanded out 119.
Washington finished its season with a record of 22-10 and the Pac-10Championship, which it shared with Stanford and Arizona State. The Huskiesposted the second-best turnaround in the nation, from one season to thenext, before finally falling to Southwest Missouri State in the West Regionchampionship game.
