PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University jumper Benson Jones, a sophomore from Concord, Calif., has been ruled ineligible by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, according to WSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk.
'Benson Jones was found in violation of the NCAA eligibility rules and has been declared ineligible effective immediately,' Sterk said Wednesday. The WSU athletic director said, because of student privacy rights, he cannot provide additional details of Jones' status.
Jones, who had been slated to compete at the Texas National Invitational this weekend, is currently WSU's leader in both jumping events and has qualified for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships with career bests of 25-4i in the long jump and 52-10 3/4i in the triple jump.
Jones joined the Cougar track program last fall after a year at Diablo Valley Community College, where he won Bay Valley Conference titles in the triple jump and long jump as a freshman. Jones attended Clayton Valley High, graduating in the spring of 1999.
