Men's Tennis Beats No. 1 UCLA, 4-3

April 21, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - Fifth-ranked Stanford University (20-1) upset top-ranked UCLA (18-2) for the second time this season with a thrilling 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The win was the Cardinal's second over the Bruins in two weeks. Stanford, which won its fifth straight Pac-10 title this season, posted a 4-3 conference victory at UCLA on April 6 to win the crown by one game over the Bruins (7-0 to 6-1). In the first meeting between the schools this season, the Bruins prevailed 4-2 in the finals of the National Team Indoor Championships on February 18 in Seattle.

The non-conference win also helped Stanford extended its home winning streak to 69 matches dating all the way back to April 6, 1996. The Cardinal, which has won 14 straight overall, concludes the regular season on Sunday at noon when it hosts 18th-ranked USC (13-7) as the Bank of the West presents 'The Stanford Challenge'. Sunday's match is a make-up of Friday's contest that was rained out.

Stanford clinched Saturday's dramatic victory when David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) broke a 3-3 tie with a three-set victory over Marcin Matkowski. The 41st-ranked Martin prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) over the 80th-ranked Matkowski to send the near-capacity crowd home happy.

Martin's victory capped an impressive comeback by the Cardinal, who needed to win four of the six singles match after dropping the doubles point. Stanford came back to tie the match at 2-2 thanks to straight set victories from 25th-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) at No. 2 and 97th-ranked Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS) at No. 4.

After the Cardinal's Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) and Bruins' Lassi Ketola traded straight set victories to tie the match at 3-3, Martin pulled out the heroic victory to enable Stanford to take the regular season series between the teams.
