Stanford Avoids Series Sweep With 9-5 Win Against Baseball
April 22, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Mike Gosling threw his first complete game and the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal avoided a Pac-10 series sweep with a 9-5 win Sunday against the No. 8 USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. Stanford (32-10, 11-4) moves into sole possession of first place, one game ahead of USC (29-14, 10-5). The Trojans won the first two games of the series and snapped Stanford's streak of 17 consecutive series wins and 10 straight Pac-10 series wins.
The Cardinal led off the first on a home run by Carlos Quentin, his seventh of the season. USC right fielder Michael Morales tried to make the catch over the fence, but the ball hit the top of his glove for the home run.
Gosling (4-0), however, shut down the Trojans for the remainder of the game. A single by Brian Barre in the eighth was the only runner allowed on base by Gosling in the final six innings of the game. Gosling allowed five runs on six hits and struck out eight.
Stanford got back into the game in the fifth when second baseman Jon Brewster committed his first error of the season on a ground ball by Arik Van Zandt. The Cardinal touched up USC starter Anthony Reyes (1-3) for three unearned runs to tie the game.
Sam Fuld hit an RBI double in the top of the sixth for the go-ahead run for the Cardinal.
The Trojans also made history when USC wore black caps for the first time in the history of the baseball program. The program has used black sleeveless tops in the past that were purchased by former players Geoff Jenkins (Milwaukee Brewers) and Gabe Alvarez, but today was the first time that the players had worn black shirts and caps.
USC will return to action tomorrow when the Trojans host San Francisco at 3 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. The game will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.usctrojans.com.
