REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's crew won three of five races from No. 10 California on Sunday at Redwood Shores, but dropped the varsity and second varsity eight contests.
OSU rowed to a time of 7:09.6 in the varsity eight race, but California finished in 6:53.0 to earn the win.
Even though the Beavers didn't come away with a varsity eight win Sunday, OSU head coach Charlie Owen saw some positives from the race.
'We continued to improve on some elements of our racing,' Owen said. 'Cal clearly is a fast crew, and we'll look forward to trying to get closer in three weeks at the Pac-10 Championships.
'I think we can make some improvements this week in practice. We were a little tired today after racing twice Saturday.'
The novice eight, varsity four and novice four all won their races, as the varsity four won with a time of 8:12.4 over Cal's 8:19.1.
The novice eight dominated its race, finishing in 7:27.1, while Cal crossed the line in 7:40.8, and OSU took the win in the novice four with a time of 8:41.7, just under seven seconds better than Cal's 8:48.6.
'The varsity four raced very well today,' OSU assistant coach Jane LaRiviere commented. 'The varsity four is maturing as a crew, and they showed some spunk in their racing today.'
The Beavers' second varsity eight was just over seven seconds off California's pace, as the Beavers finished in 7:16.5 compared to 7:09.0 by Cal.
