Baseball Falls To USF At Home
April 23, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Right fielder Jeramy Janz hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth Monday and the University of San Francisco Dons upset the No. 6 USC Trojans, 10-8, in a sloppy non-conference game at Dedeaux Field. It was only the second win by USF against USC in a 13-game series. The Trojans defeated the Dons, 23-0, in the last meeting between the two teams during the 1975 season.
The Dons (23-19) defeated a Pac-10 team on the road for the second time in a week. USF won at Stanford, 5-4, last week at Sunken Diamond.
The Trojans (29-15) tied a season-high with four errors on the afternoon.
USF scored three runs in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Armand Gaerlan scored on a wild pitch by starter Chad Clark to cap the inning.
USC answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Alberto Concepcion started the rally with a two-run double to right center. In his last four games, Concepcion has hit three doubles, a triple and two home runs.
The Dons came back when Clark and Brian Bannister combined to throw four walks in the fourth inning as USF scored three times to tie the game. With the score tied at 7-7 in the sixth, Janz hammered the pitch by Jon Williams (0-1) for the game-winning run.
Chris Gossert (4-1) saved the day for USF on the mound when he allowed only one run in 4 2/3 innings of work to pick up the win for the Dons.
Trojan pitchers walked eight and threw five wild pitches, including two that allowed USF runners from third to score.
USC will return to action tomorrow when the Trojans travel to Loyola Marymount for a 2:30 p.m. game. The game will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.usctrojans.com.
