Bell Fires 75 To Open Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship
April 23, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. --- Donna Bell returned to the Washington State lineup in spectacular fashion on Monday, carding a 75 in the first round of the Pac-10 Championship at the Karsten Golf Course.
The sophomore from Prince George, BC missed last week's Peg Barnard California Collegiate and is competing in the conference tournament as an individual. She finished the day tied for 19th, six strokes off the lead.
It was a disappointing opening round for the rest of the Cougars. WSU is in 10th place, 25 strokes out of ninth. Sophomore Shanelle Roberts shot an 81, while freshman Emily De'Ath carded an 83. Team scoring leader Tasha Browner tied a season-high with an 84 and Jennifer Dodd rounded out the scoring with an 86.
California jumped to a surprising six-stroke lead over defending champion Arizona on the team leader board. Arizona State, Stanford, and USC are seven strokes back tied for third.
The individual lead belongs to Sarah Huarte of California, who fired a 69 and has a one-stroke advantage over second place Lorena Ochoa of Arizona. Ochoa's teammate, Natalie Gulbis, is two strokes back in third.
Play will resume at the par 72 Karsten Golf Course at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
