Men's Golf Hosts 2001 Pac-10 Championships This Weekend

THIS WEEK: The Stanford men's golf team will host the 42nd 2001 Men's Pacific-10 Golf Championships, Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29 at the Stanford Golf Course (par 71, 6786 yardage) in Stanford, California. All ten conference schools will send a team to the championship.

PRACTICE ROUNDS: Practice rounds are set for Thursday, April 26 with teams teeing off from 9 a.m. to 11:51 a.m.

GROUPS FOR FRIDAY'S PAIRINGS: Group 1: USC, California, Group 2: Arizona, Stanford, Group 3: Washington, Washington State, Group 4: Arizona State, Oregon State, Group 5: Oregon, UCLA.

FRIDAY TEE TIMES: Tee times will begin around 8 a.m. on Friday morning. California and USC will tee off from the first tee at 7:54 a.m. while Washington and Washington State will tee off from the 10th tee at 7:30 a.m. Arizona and Stanford will tee off in the morning at 8:42 from the first tee. Arizona State and Oregon State will tee off at 8:18 a.m. from the 10th tee and Oregon and UCLA will tee off at 9:06 a.m., also from the 10th tee.

LAST YEAR: Arizona State captured its sixth consecutive Pac-10 title and 11th conference title overall in 2000, finishing 37 strokes ahead of second place finisher Oregon State. ASU's team score (1,384) was the lowest 72-hole score in Pac-10 Championships history by 19 strokes. Sun Devils junior Paul Casey captured his third consecutive Pac-10 individual title, a feat matched by only one other person (USC's Sherman Finger in 1964-, '65 and '66).

STANFORD AT 2000 PAC-10S: Stanford finished sixth, shooting a 1,448 at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships. Top finisher for Stanford was Eric Dahlberg who tied for 17th carding a 286 for the tourney. The Cardinal's last conference title came in 1994 in Tucson, Arizona where they shot a 1,459 to take top honors. Stanford's last individual titlelist was crowned in 1996 as Tiger Woods shot a then-championship record 270.

LAST WEEK FOR THE CARDINAL: In a prep for the Pac-10 Championships, Stanford hosted the U.S. Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course. The Cardinal finished fifth overall carding a three-round score of 863. Sophomore Philip Rowe and senior Alex Aragon tied for 14th individually to lead the Cardinal.

STANFORD CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: Stanford won the first ever Pac-10 Championship in 1960 with a score of 1,192 at the Stanford Golf Course ... They have won seven total conference championships, the last coming in 1994 (in Tucson, Arizona) ... The Cardinal have had nine individual champions, including the first (Pete Choate in 1960) ... Stanford's last individual champ was Tiger Woods in 1996 (in Newport Beach, Calif.) ... Stanford is the last team to win a Pac-10 Championship besides Arizona State, who have won six consecutive ... The Cardinal's last top five finish at the conference championships came in 1997 (Eugene, Ore.) where they took fourth.
