Women's Golf In First After Opening Round of Pac-10 Championship

April 23, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. - After firing a school record team score of a par 288 in the opening round, the California women's golf team finds itself in first place Monday at the Pac-10 Championship at Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State. The 41st-ranked Golden Bears are six strokes ahead of second-ranked Arizona (294) with 36 holes remaining.

Cal posted its previous school record of 292 in the final round of last year's conference tournament on its way to a school-best fourth-place finish.

In a three-way tie for third at 295 are No. 21 Arizona State, No. 6 Stanford and No. 4 USC.

The Bears fast start has been spurred by freshman Sarah Huarte, who leads the field after carding a three-under-par 69 in the first round. That round broke the previous Cal record of 70, which was set on three occasions by junior Anne Walker and once by former Bear Lisa Yamane.

Huarte is one stroke ahead of the nation's top golfer, Arizona freshman Lorena Ochoa (70). Tenth-ranked Natalie Gulbis of Arizona is in third after firing a 71. Cal's Walker and sophomore Vikki Laing are part of a six-way tie for fourth after shooting an even par of 72.

The second round of the Pac-10 Championship tees off Tuesday at 8 a.m. PT.
