Ferguson Poised To Make A Run At Title At Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships
April 24, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - - Oregon State sophomore Stacie Ferguson is poised to make a run at the individual title at the Pacific-10 Women's Golf Championships when she tees off in Wednesday's final round at the Stanford Golf Course, as she is tied for 11th after shooting 72 in Tuesday's second round.
Ferguson, a native of Tucson, Ariz., sits five strokes behind leader Natalie Gulbis of Arizona after shooting 75-72--147 in the first two rounds at the par-72, 6,101-yard course. Ferguson, who finished tied for 14th at last year's championship, got to 4-under at one point in her round.
'Stacie can do it tomorrow,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'She just needs to stay in her own game and not worry about everything else that's going on.
'As a team, they know what they have to do, so I'm probably not going to tell them a whole lot. They've been better this spring, but they need to get it together now. They need to get after it and attack the pins when they can tomorrow.'
The Beavers struggled as a team on Tuesday, as they shot 310 after a 306 to open the tournament. The Beavers, in ninth place, totaled 616 over the first two rounds, and trail Oregon by one shot.
Carina Olsson hung on after a slow start and shot 78 to forge a tie for 29th with a score of 10-over-par 154, while freshman Marylyn Brand is three strokes back in a tie for 42nd at 157 after shooting 80 Tuesday.
Arizona and Arizona State are duking it out atop the leaderboard, as they are knotted at 586. Arizona shot 291 Tuesday while Arizona State came in at 292. California stumbled to a 302 after an opening-round 288 had them in the lead Monday.
