Athletes of the Week Named
April 25, 2001
Corvallis, Ore. - Third baseman Brian Barden and gymnast Katrina Severin have been named Oregon State University's Athletes of the Week for their performances in competition during the week of April 16-22, it was announced Wednesday.
Barden, a sophomore from Augustine High School in Bonita, Cal., led the Beavers to a 4-0 record last week with a win over Concordia and three wins over Washington State. In the four games, Barden hit .611 (11-for-18) with 2 home runs, 3 doubles and 13 RBI. He capped the weekend with a game-winning grand slam home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning against WSU.
Severin, a senior from Eugene, capped off an outstanding senior year by earning first team All-American honors and placing second on vault at the NCAA Championships last weekend at Athens, Georgia. Her second place showing on that event is the highest ever for a Beaver vaulter. She narrowly missed becoming OSU's first national champion on vault by a mere .0125.
Severin also led OSU on her other two events at the NCAA Championships. She scored a 9.825 on her beam routine, just .025 shy of earning All-American honors on that event as well. Her 9.775 score on floor was OSU's best on that event at nationals as well.
