April 25, 2001

BERKELEY - Cal returns to Stanford Golf Course (par 71, 6,786 yards) for the second week in a row on April 27-29 to compete in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships. The Bears finished in 9th place at the U.S. Intercollegiate played last weekend with a team score of 873 (+21).

As was the case last week, Desimone said the key to the Stanford course is executing well on the Par 5's. He also acknowledged that although the tournament is wide open, the host Cardinal play the course very well.

Cal is in Group 1 with USC and will tee off on Friday at 7:54 a.m. Last year Arizona State captured its sixth consecutive Pac-10 title finishing 37 strokes ahead of second-place Oregon State. The Bears placed third with a 12-under-par 1428.

Cal finished 9th out of 18 teams at the U.S. Intercollegiate on April 21-22 at Stanford.

Sophomore Jesse Ruda played his best tournament of the Spring and led the Bears with a 2-under-par 211, good enough to tie him for fourth place individually.

Junior Walter Chun finished with a 1-over-par 214 (tie-14th), redshirt freshman Peter Tomasulo finished with an 8-over-par 221 (tie-43rd), senior Dong Yi shot a 15-over-par 228 (tie-72nd) and sophomore James Hahn scored a 17-over-par 230 (tie-82nd). Freshman Lance Torrey competed as an individual and posted a three-round score of 227 (+14, tie-67th).
