April 25, 2001
A LOOK AT THE PAC-10 INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS-
The Pac-10's nine women's teams and eight men's teams head to Ojai, Calif., Thursday, April 26 through Sunday, April 29, to decide the league's singles and doubles champions.
For the women, the tournament will feature a 32-player singles draw, in which three athletes from each school will participate, with five additional competitors selected by a committee of coaches, based upon the competitor's records. In doubles, there will be a 16-team draw, which shall consist of one doubles teams from each school and seven additional teams selected by the committee, based upon the participants record.
In addition, there is also a Pac-10 Invitational tournament, which will feature players who missed the top spots in the Pac-10 championship tournament. They will have a chance to notch significant wins in singles and in doubles.
WOMEN FINISH FIFTH IN PAC-10:
The Cal women's tennis team ended the season with a 3-5 Pac-10 record, tying them for fifth place in the Pac-10 with Washington State. The last time the women finished fifth in the Pac-10 was 1996, when the team went 1-9 in the conference.
BEARS MOVE UP THE RANKINGS:
Despite losing four of their last five matches and closing out the season with three losses in a row, the women's team has garnered a No. 7 national ranking by the ITA. Moving up two spots from No. 9 last week, the Bears are determined to prove that despite a youthful squad made up mostly of freshmen, they are united and ready to duplicate last year's run to the NCAA Final Four.
