April 25, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 3 Stanford softball team is in action today in a non-conference doubleheader with Saint Mary's. The Cardinal brings a 42-6-1 overall record into today's twinbill while the Gaels are sporting a 23-28 mark on the year.
Last weekend, Stanford went 2-1 in Pacific-10 Conference play. The Cardinal traveled to No. 2 Arizona and dropped a 7-0 game, but then bounced back to sweep a doubleheader with No. 8 Arizona State. The Cardinal hit seven home runs in the two games with the Sun Devils, including two each from Jessica Allister and Kira Ching. Maureen LeCocq pitched a complete game shutout in the first game, while Tori Nyberg picked up the win in the second.
The Gaels were last in action yesterday as they were swept in a doubleheader by Cal Poly. Both games went extra innings - the first was an 8-4 loss in eight while the second was a three-hour, 10-inning game with the Mustangs winning 11-10. Jennifer Fawkes went 3-for-5 with three runs scored while Jessica Hanaseth drove in three runs. Sara Wiedlin pitched all 10 innings in the night cap, giving up just one earned run.
The Cardinal returns to Pac-10 play this weekend when it travels to No. 13 Washington and No. 2 UCLA.
