Women's Golf Fires Season-Best At Pac-10s, Finishes Eighth
April 25, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - - Marylyn Brand fired a 72 and Carina Olsson shot 73 to pace the Oregon State women's golf team in Wednesday's final round of the Pacific-10 Championships. The Beavers moved up to eighth after shooting a season-best score of 296 at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State University.
OSU's total of 912 over the three rounds on the 6,101-yard course came amidst some of the toughest competition they have faced all year, as six of the 10 teams are ranked among the nation's top 25. The score of 296 stands as the fifth-lowest in school history.
Three of the nation's top 10 teams competed, including tournament winner No. 2 Arizona, who edged No. 5 Stanford by a three-stroke margin with an 873.
Stacie Ferguson was among the quintet of Beavers who shot rounds in the 70s on the final day, as the sophomore carded a 75 to secure a tie for 13th with her score of 6-over-par 222. Ferguson's 222 ties Ashlei Pendleton for the lowest round on the team this season.
Ferguson opened the tournament with a 75, then backed it up with an even-par 72 on Tuesday to move into 11th. Ferguson now owns two of the top three finishes in OSU's history at the Pac-10 Championships, as this year's finish ties her with Kathleen Takaishi for the second highest, and last year's 14th-place finish was good for third all-time. Danielle Mitchell sits atop the list, thanks to her fourth-place effort in 1993.
'They feel pretty good about the way we finished here,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said of her squad. 'I think Stacie was a little disappointed that she didn't make it into the top 10, but she played well here.
'Finishing eighth in this conference is pretty good, and we're pleased with the way it went today, overall it's a nice way to go out before regionals.'
Brand, a freshman, wrapped up her tournament in whirlwind fashion, as she breezed through her round in an even-par 72, which is a career-best by four strokes. She finished her first-ever Pac-10 tournament tied for 31st at 229.
'Marylyn played very well today,' Lakowske commented. 'She had five birdies, and was 1-under at one point, so she's getting back (from an injury) and is playing well. Carina had a good day today, too.'
Olsson's 73 gave her a total of 227 for the tournament, putting her in a tie for 25th. The senior has never finished lower than 29th at the conference championships in her four years at Oregon State.
Getting their first taste of collegiate championship golf this week were sophomore transfer (TCU) Ashlei Pendleton and freshman Laura Skinner. Pendleton, who has OSU's second-best finish of the season with a tie for 12th at Arizona State earlier this season, shot 78 on Wednesday to give her 236 and a tie for 42nd.
Skinner turned in a 239 for the tournament after a 76 in the final round to tie for 51st, while fellow freshman Kelly Ferris, playing as an individual, shot 250 and was 58th.
It took a playoff to decide the winner of the individual championship, as Arizona teammates Lorena Ochoa and Natalie Gulbis, ranked first and fourth in the nation, respectively, slugged it out atop the leaderboard. The two went to a playoff before Ochoa claimed the Pac-10 title, shooting 3-under 213.
The Beavers have now likely qualified for the NCAA West Regionals, which they host at Trysting Tree Golf Club May 10-12.
