April 26, 2001

OJAI, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team dominated the opening day of the Pac-10 Individual Championships by winning 14 of a possible 15 matches on Thursday in Ojai. Action continues on Friday on both the men's and women's sides with the singles quarterfinals and first and second rounds of doubles.

The Cardinal men placed three of their four entrants into the quarterfinals of the 32-player main draw for the Pac-10 Singles Championships. In the men's invitational, Stanford went unbeaten and has four of the eight quarterfinalists.

In the main draw of the Pac-10 Singles Championships, the Cardinal's Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS), K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) all won two matches on Thursday to advance to the quarters. Kim, who is the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation and was a finalist at Pac-10s last year, beat Damien Spizzo of USC 6-3, 6-2 and 72nd-ranked Balazs Veress of California 6-0, 6-4. The 21st-ranked Hippensteel eliminated Pim Van Mele of Arizona State 7-5, 6-4 and Ruben Torres of USC 6-4, 6-3, while the 94th-ranked Haviland knocked off Ari Strasberg of Washington 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and 91st-ranked Steven Capriati of Arizona 6-2, 6-3.

The quarterfinals begin on Friday at 8:00 a.m. with Kim meeting 77th-ranked Ryan Moore of USC and Haviland facing 12th-ranked Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA. Hippensteel will play at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of the suspended match between 16th-ranked John Paul Fruttero of California and 76th-ranked Erfan Djahangiri of UCLA.

In the men's invitational, the Cardinal's Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS), Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS), Carter Morris (Washington, D.C./St. Albam's HS) and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood School) all reached the quarters. Ansari was particularly dominant, losing a combined total of just four games in easy wins over Christian Jensen of USC and Olivier Charroin of Arizona State.

The top-ranked and undefeated Stanford women's team sent only four representatives to Ojai. None of the four reached the singles quarters, though freshmen Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson HS) and Lizzy Bennett (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara HS) both reached the second rounds of their respective draws.
