Women's Track Signs Middle Distance Prospect

April 26, 2001

EUGENE - The University of Oregon women's track and field team announced Thursday its first letter of intent for the upcoming 2001-2002 collegiate season.

Expected to be a key middle-distance addition, Sara Schaaf of Klamath Union High School in Klamath Falls, Ore., won the 4A 2000 state 400 title in the 400 (56.37) and took seventh in the 800 (2:16.96).

Her current 2001 season bests are 57.4 in the 400 and 2:18.6 in 2001.

'Sara had a great run in the state meet last spring,' Oregon women's head coach Tom Heinonen said. 'She's ready and willing to move up in distance and take aim at the 800, and maybe even the 1,500 in college. She's unafraid of distances - she went to the Steens Mountain Running Camp last year and loved it. And this is a girl who runs on her school's 4x100 relay. She's a terrific prospect.'
