Four Bears Sign Free Agent Contracts

April 27, 2001

BERKELEY - Less than a week after the 2001 NFL Draft, four Cal football players have signed free agent contracts with teams around the league.

The first to sign was defensive end Shaun Paga, who also stars on Cal's top-ranked rugby team. Paga joined the Minnesota Vikings, who are intrigued by his potential as a special teams player.

Jacob Waasdorp, a two-time All-Pac-10 defensive tackle, has signed with the Green Bay Packers, while versatile offensive lineman Reed Diehl signed with the Tennessee Titans. Later in the week, cornerback Chidi Iwuoma hooked up with the Detroit Lions.

Cal had two players selected in the draft, defensive end Andre Carter and punter Nick Harris. Carter was taken in the first round (seventh overall) by the San Francisco 49ers, and Harris went in the fourth round to the Denver Broncos. Carter, Cal's highest draft pick since quarterback Rich Campbell went sixth overall to Green Bay in 1981, is the eighth Bear to be taken in the first round in the last eight years.
