No. 14 Beavers Shutout No. 9 Arizona State, 2-0
April 28, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - Five hits in the opening inning propelled the No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball team to a 2-0 victory against No. 9 Arizona State on Saturday night.
With the victory, the Beavers improve to 37-18-1 on the season and 6-7 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Sun Devils fall to 31-16 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Oregon State struck early, scoring the only runs of the contest in the first inning by capitalizing on five consecutive singles to left field.
Michelle Chariton started things off with a one-out slap single past the ASU shortstop and Clare Burnum followed with a slap to the same spot. Senior Shawna Feldt's single loaded the bases for cleanup hitter Shelly Prochaska who proceeded to single to left and knock in Chariton with what proved to be the game winning run. Steph Adams followed with a single to score Burnum.
'Offensively it was nice to jump on them right away,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We swung the bats aggressively in the first inning.'
Arizona State threatened in the fourth after back-to-back singles by Kara Brun and Phelan Wright to start the inning. The Beavers squelched the rally by retiring the next three batters to end the threat.
ASU recorded the only extra base hit in the contest when Wright hit a two-out triple to left-center field but OSU hurler Crystal Draper forced Ericka Beach to pop-up and end the inning.
Jessica King's pinch hit single to left-center in the seventh was Oregon State's only other hit on the night as Beach shut down batters after the first inning.
'Ericka made a nice adjustment after the first inning,' said Walker. 'We struggled to get comfortable until later in the game.'
Draper struck out three on her way to improving her record to 23-9 on the season.
'Crystal threw a nice game,' said Walker. 'She made a couple of mistakes but got some big outs in crucial situations.'
The Beavers and Sun Devils will conclude the season series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
