Reehoorn, White In Top 20 At Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship
April 28, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. --- Jeremy Taylor led Washington State with a 70 in the third round at the Pac-10 Championship on Saturday.
Despite Taylor, the Cougars dropped from seventh to eighth, holding a nine-stroke lead over Oregon and an 11-stroke lead over Oregon State. Southern California remained at the top of the leader board on Saturday, but saw their lead shrink to only two strokes over Arizona. Arizona State is in third place seven shots off the leader.
'We didn't play too bad today,' head coach Walt Williams said. 'But when you play in a conference like the Pac-10, you have to be at the top of your game every single day and every single round, or people are going to take advantage of that.'
Taylor's 70 put him into a five-way tie for 29th place. Junior Jon Reehoorn followed Taylor with a 71 in the third round, and is the highest Cougar in the individual standings at 13th place. Friday's hero, sophomore Dustin White, dropped from fifth to a tie for 16th after shooting a 76.
'Jeremy and Jon have pushed the guys on this team to be better all year. Without a doubt, they are the leaders on this team,' Williams said. 'In this tournament, they have both really stepped up and played well, and that's what you have to have from your leaders.'
For the second straight day, Arizona's Ricky Barnes is the individual leader. Barnes fired a 69 in the third round and is an incredible 16 strokes under par through three rounds. Southern California's Hunter Mahan, Arizona State's Matt Jones, and Arizona's Chris Nallen are tied for second at 204.
'I'm happy with the focus that we've displayed so far,' Williams said. 'We played well yesterday and the guys were not content with that. They want to move even further up. We didn't get the scores that we would have liked overall today, but I'm confident that we will come out and play better tomorrow. That's the type of players we have.'
The final round at the Stanford Golf Course begins at 8 a.m.
