Beavers Batter 'Bows

April 29, 2001

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Oregon State tied its season-high for runs scored in an 18-7 win over Hawai'i in non-league baseball Saturday night at Rainbow Stadium. Curtis Davis was 4-for-7 with a home run and five runs batted in for the Beavers (28-17 overall, 8-7 Pacific-10), who won for the 20th time in their last 29 games.

OSU and Hawai'i (21-24, 10-17 Western Athletic) wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 5 p.m. PDT. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, every member of Oregon State's lineup had a hit as the Beavers banged out 21 hits against five Rainbow pitchers. That came one day after OSU had been limited to three hits in the first game of the series.

'We flip-flopped some people in the order and tried for a little different look, and some guys did good things offensively,' OSU coach Pat Casey said. 'I thought Scott (Nicholson) pitched better than his numbers.'

Nicholson went the distance for the win to improve to 9-2, allowing seven runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and one walk while striking out eight. He pitched his eighth complete game of the spring, tying him for ninth place on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders.

Oregon State gave Nicholson a 3-0 lead before he ever took the mound, getting run-scoring singles from Brian Barden, Davis and Andy Jarvis in the top of the third inning. The hits by Davis and Jarvis came with two out, starting a night on which OSU would score 12 of its 18 runs with two out.

Barden went on to go 3-for-6 and drive in three runs to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, he has at least two hits in every game of the streak. During the streak, he's batting .591 (26-for-44) with 3 homers, 1 triple, 5 doubles and 21 RBIs.

The Beavers pushed their lead to 6-1 in the to of the second inning. After the first two OSU hitters were retired by Sean Yamashita, Barden and Chris Biles singled and Davis followed with his second homer of the season, a three-run bolt to centerfield.

Oregon State added two more runs to go up 8-2 in the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, Hawai'i came up with three hits and a hit batter and OSU committed two errors but Nicholson limited the damage and the Rainbows could score only two runs to make it 8-4.

The Beavers came right back in the top of the sixth, using four walks, a bunt single and a sacrifice fly to score three times for an 11-4 lead.

Oregon State went in front 12-4 on an unusual play in the top of the eighth as Will Hudson scored from second on a wild pitch. The pitch from Hawai'i reliever Grant Sato bounced into the ample foul territory on the third-base side of the backstop and Hudson never slowed as he rounded third and dove across the plate ahead of Sato's tag.

The Rainbows got within 12-7 on pinch-hitter Ryan Anderson's two-out, three-run homer off Nicholson in the bottom of the eighth inning, getting a flyball into the breeze blowing across the diamond from left to right.

OSU wrapped up the game with its sixth-run ninth, though. OSU got a two-run single by Biles, a run-scoring double by Zach Gordon and run-scoring singles by Barden, Davis and Carter in the inning.

Carter was 4-for-7 with two runs batted in, Jarvis was 3-for-7 and Gordon and Biles were both 2-for-6 for Oregon State. Eric Stark tripled, tying him for third on OSU's all-time list of career leaders with nine and tying him for eighth on the school's list of single-season leaders with four.

OSU had at least 10 hits for the 29th time this season, and OSU reached the 15-hit mark for the 14th time.
