Cougar Baseball Dominates Huskies in 7-2 Win
April 29, 2001
PULLMAN - Washington State starter Justin Cayetano surrendered just two runs on five hits through eight and one-third innings to earn his third win of the season and lead the Cougars to a 7-2 victory over the Washington Huskies Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. With the series-finale win, WSU improved to 15-29 overall (6-12 in Pac-10) while Washington dropped to 24-15 (5-10).
After giving up a first inning home run by Washington second baseman Marc Rittenhouse, Cayetano pitched great shut-out baseball for the next eight innings, as one other Husky hit and a fly-out were the only other times the ball got past the infield until two outs remained for Washington in the ninth. Cayetano struck out six batters and walked three to run his record to 3-2 for the season.
Garrett Alwert got the Cougars on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a single back up the middle that scored Mike Knight and Bookie Gates to give WSU a 2-1 advantage. Center fielder Evan Hecker collected two RBI of his own with a one-out double to send Richard Hall and Jon Baeder across the plate. After Hecker advanced to third on a wild pitch from Husky starter Sean White, Knight hit his second double of the game, and fifth of the series, to score Hecker and make it a 5-1 ballgame.
WSU scored one run in each of the next two innings, starting with a sacrifice fly off Baeder's bat that plated Brent Robertson in the sixth, and Hecker scored in the seventh inning when Gates doubled to center field to give the Cougars a commanding six run lead.
Cayetano gave up one run on three hits with one out in the Huskies' final frame, but reliever Donny Davis came on in relief and retire two of the three batters to ensure the first Cougs' victory over Washington in the last ten meetings.
The next action for the Washington State baseball squad will be a home exhibition game Wednesday against Prairie Baseball Academy at 6 p.m., followed by a weekend series against the LCSC Warriors starting Friday at 6 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
