Men's Golf 10th At Pac-10s

April 29, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - - The Oregon State men's golf team shot its best round of the week at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships on Sunday when it turned in a 1-over-par 356. That wasn't enough, however, to move out of 10th place and the Beavers ended up five shots behind California with a score of 1,447. Only nine shots separated OSU from sixth-place Stanford.

Southern California secured a four-stroke wire-to-wire win with a final-round 349 while holding off hard-charging defending champion Arizona State.

Individually, Arizona's Ricky Barnes took home medalist honors, earning a three-stroke victory over USC's Hunter Mahan with a 16-under-par 268.

For the Beavers, senior Anthony Arvidson and redshirt freshman Daren Grieg tied for 22nd after shooting four-round totals of 286 at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.

For Arvidson, his final-round 75 secured his 14th consecutive top-25 finish, dating back to last season's U.S. Intercollegiate, as he finished at 2-over par for the championship.

Grieg played the last two rounds in 2-under par, shooting 70s on Saturday and Sunday to give him a total of 2-over 286 for the tournament. Prior to the Pac-10s, the redshirt freshman had only one top-25 finish this season, which came at the Louisiana-Monroe Tournament in the fall.

Also coming into his own this week was true freshman David Williams. The Corvallis native tied for 31st after shooting 5-over 289, which included a final-round 74 on Sunday.

'Although we didn't move up in the standings, we played much better as a team,' OSU coach Mike Ketcham commented. 'I thought the kids did a pretty decent job of getting around the course today.

'Daren Grieg and David Williams have really come into their own at this tournament. They're coming of age and are really starting to figure things out. It's nice to see.'

Also finishing the tournament strong for the Beavers were Mike Jurgensen and Dave Yarnes. Jurgensen burned up the course with Sunday's 68, while Yarnes wrapped up his tournament by breaking par with a 70. Jurgensen tied for 37th at 292, while Yarnes shot 300 to tie for 56th.

Joining Yarnes in 56th was Todd Deacon, who finished up with a 74 on Sunday after a 73 Saturday.

The Beavers host the NCAA West Regional Championship May 17-19 at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
