April 29, 2001
The No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball team knocked off No. 9 Arizona State, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon to sweep the weekend series with the Sun Devils.
With the victory, the Beavers improve to 38-18-1 on the season and 7-7 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Sun Devils fall to 31-17 overall and 6-9 in conference action.
Jessica King started off the scoring with a third inning leadoff home run to right field, her first of the season and second in her career, to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Oregon State added three more runs in the fourth. Senior Shawna Feldt belted a leadoff double to left-center field and Steph Adams drew a one-out walk to put two runners aboard. ASU pitcher Kirsten Voak fanned Brynnen Guthrie for the second out of the inning but sophomore Cara Maxey followed with a single to right field which loaded the bases.
King hit a routine grounder to second base but Sun Devil shortstop Kara Brun bobbled the throw, allowing Feldt and Adams to score. Senior Brooke Rutschman followed with an RBI-double to left-center, knocking in Maxey for what proved to be the game-winner.
Arizona State got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. After giving up a leadoff single to Ericka Beach and walking the following Sun Devil batter, pitcher Monica Hoffman was replaced by Crystal Draper. OSU recorded three-straight outs but Jennifer Forner's sacrifice fly to deep centerfield knocked in a run.
ASU added a pair of runs in the fifth, capitalizing Brun's one-out double and three consecutive singles.
Arizona State pounded 10 hits in the contest compared to Oregon State's six but stranded 10 runners on base.
Draper earned the victory for the Beavers to improve to 24-9 on the season.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis to face Portland State in a non-conference double-header on Wednesday at the OSU Softball Complex. Game-1 is set to start at 2 p.m.
