UCLA Men Place Second at Cal/Nevada Championships, Bruin Women Place Fourth

Art Venegas' UCLA men's team placed second and Jeanette Bolden's Bruinwomen's squad was fourth at the Cal/Nevada Track & Field Championships, held atUC Irvine. The meet was a two-day affair that concluded Sunday.

The Bruin men placed a strong second, with 125.33 points, just behindfirst-place California, with 127 points. UCLA's women had 58.67 points forfourth-place, behind first-place San Diego State (110), California (83.67) andNevada (59). Neither Bruin squad was at full-strength. The UCLA men held outtheir top sprinters and 400m hurdlers and the Bruin women sprinters, hurdlersand relay participants were at the Penn Relays.

In men's competition, the Bruin winners were: freshman Chucky Ryan in the110m hurdles (14.08, season-best) and UCLA's 4 X 400m relay (3:09.20,season-best). UCLA went one-three in the discus: junior Scott Moser was first(197-5), followed by freshman Dan Ames (183-7) and sophomore Scott Wiegand(174-6, personal-best).

Finishing second for the UCLA men were junior Andrew Wulf in the 3000msteeplechase (9:03.72, personal-best), freshman Yoo Kim in the pole vault (16-71/4-tied for second, personal-best), Wiegand in the shot put (59-11 1/4,personal-best) and sophomore Nate Marum in the javelin (210-11). Freshman NickThornton was third in the 800m (1:51.46, personal-best).

In women's competition, the Bruins were led be these winners: junior TracyO'Hara in the pole vault (14-6, season-best, top collegiate mark in the U. S.,NCAA automatic qualifier) and senior Christina Tolson in the shot put (56-7 1/4)and hammer throw (211-10). For her wins in both the shot put and hammer throw,Tolson was named the Cal/Nevada Field Athlete of the Year.

Sophomore Chaniqua Ross was second in the discus (171-4). A third-placefinish was turned in by junior Heather Sickler in the pole vault (12-8 1/4).

Looking ahead, the Bruin men and women will travel across town on Saturday(May 5), for the annual dual meet with archrival USC. Field events will start at11 a.m. and running events at 11:15 a.m.
