PAC-10 STANDINGS FIND NEW LEADER AT THE TOPUSC gains sole possession of first place

With its sweep over UCLA last weekend, USC moves to the top of the Pac-10 standings ... Other changes in the Conference rankings include CALIFORNIA moving into sole possession of fourth place and ARIZONA STATE in sole possession of fifth place. With their losses last week, the Bruins fell to seventh place ... Standings can possibly change again this week as the Bears take on the Bruins in Los Angeles and OREGON STATE faces off against WASHINGTON in the only Pac-10 games scheduled.

2001 Team Notes

ARIZONA (29-21 Overall, 8-10 Pac-10)Last Week: ASU L 4-7, W 3-1, L 5-6/11 inn This Week: No Games

Arizona managed only one win against Arizona State last weekend in Tempe. The Wildcats drop to sixth place in the Conference ... The 'Cats put up 14 hits in the first game of the series, but weren't able to translate them into runs, stranding 10 players on base. It wasn't easy for Arizona on the defensive side either, as the Wildcat pitching staff issued eight walks, while only striking out three batters. Junior INF Justin St. Clair turned in a good plate performance that game going 3-for-4 with a home run ... Game two of the series, saw strong pitching outings from freshman RHP Sean Rierson and reliever Brian Anderson. Rierson allowed one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 7.2 innings pitched. Anderson inherited a bases loaded, no-

out situation and came out on top earning his first career save ... Offensively in that game, junior RF Shelley Duncan hit his 17th career Conference home run, tying him with Dave Shermet for first on Arizona's all-time list ... Arizona has this week off from play. The Wildcats return to action May 11-13 when they travel to the Bay Area to take on Stanford.

ARIZONA STATE (30-15-1, Overall, 9-9 Pac-10)Last Week: Gonzaga W 7-6, 9-1, ARIZ W 7-4, L 1-3, W 6-5/11inn This Week: at Tennessee

The Sun Devils swept Gonzaga in a two-game midweek series before taking two games of a three-game set from Arizona, marking the second straight series the Sun Devils have taken from a Pac-10 team. ASU has now won eight of its last 10 games ... With five hits tallied in last week's games, senior C Casey Myers is one hit shy of reaching 300 career hits. He would become just the third Sun Devil to ever reach that coveted mark ... By pulling out a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Wildcats, the Sun Devils preserved Coach Murphy's series winning streak against Arizona. The ASU head coach owns a 25-14 record over the 'Cats ... Junior LHP Jon Switzer recorded his first win since Mar. 23. He also notched his 300th career strikeout on Saturday ... Other pitchers doing well on the mound for the Sun Devils include firemen senior LHP Drew Friedberg and freshman RHP Aaron Klusman. Friedberg has a team-leading 2.09 ERA with 47 K's in 43 innings pitched. Klusman has pitched in a team-leading 19 games this season, and is second only to Friedberg in ERA (3.23). He has struck out 45 batters in 30.2 innings pitched ... The Sun Devils are at Tennessee for a midweek series and play no games this weekend. ASU will head to Seattle to take on Washington May 12.

CALIFORNIA (26-22 Overall, 11-10 Pac-10)Last Week: Nevada L 3-6, STAN W 7-4, 4-0, L 0-8 This Week: at San Francisco, at UCLA

Cal upset Stanford twice last weekend, just missing the sweep with a loss on Sunday. The Bears' series victory over the Cardinal occurred for the first time since May 1993 ... Junior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson led Cal to its opening victory against Stanford with his second complete game of the season. He allowed only two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out 10 batters and allowing only one walk. Hutchinson's brother Chad was a quarterback and star pitcher at Stanford ... On Saturday, the Conference saves leader, Matt Brown, earned his ninth save of the season. Brown inherited a one-out bases loaded situation, but was able to preserve the win and earn the save. The bases loaded jam was familiar to Brown, as he came into the same situation in Cal's Mar. 3 game at Stanford ... With one home run and three RBI last week, senior Clint Hoover stands in fifth place on the Bears all-time home run list (35) and tied for seventh on the all-time RBI list (140) ... Junior 2B Carson White has hit safely in 17 consecutive games. Last week he went 7-for-15 with three runs scored and one RBI ... Cal wraps up Pac-10 play this weekend, playing their final Conference games at UCLA.

OREGON STATE (28-18 Overall, 8-7 Pac-10)Last Week: Portland W 10-9, 13-6, Hawaii L 3-7, W 18-7, L 9-12 This Week: at WASH

Oregon State stretched its winning streak to six games with a two-game midweek sweep over Portland, before having it halted with a 7-3 loss in their first game against Hawaii. The Beavers would rebound the next day to pound out an 18-7 victory, but fell again with a 12-9 loss in the final game ... In OSU's 18-7 victory, the Beavers tied their season-high for runs scored. Every member of the Beavers' lineup recorded a hit ... Sophomore 3B Brian Barden's 10-game hitting streak ended in Sunday's loss. During the streak, Barden had multiple hits in each game and batted .591 (26-for-44) with three home runs, five doubles, one triple and 21 RBI ... OSU's 12-hit and 15-hit games against Hawaii gives the Beavers 30 of 46 games in which they have knocked out at least 10 hits. The Beavers have knocked out 15 or more hits in a game, 14 times this season ... Senior DH Curtis Davis did very well in Hawaii, hitting at a .667 clip (8-for-12) with one homer, three doubles, seven runs scored and five RBI ... Oregon State plays no midweek games and travels to take on Washington this weekend.

STANFORD (34-12 Overall, 12-6 Pac-10)Last Week: San Jose State, W 4-3, CAL L 4-7, 0-4, W 8-0 This Week: Santa Clara, at Sacramento State

For the second week in a row, the Cardinal went 1-2 against a Pac-10 opponent. Stanford struggled against Cal in the first two games of the series, but came up with an 8-0 Sunday win ... The setback in Berkeley allowed USC to jump a game ahead of Stanford and claim sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 standings ... In Sunday's win, junior LHP Mike Gosling threw his first career shutout and turned in a strong pitching performance against the Bears, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters. That game saw Gosling set the Bears down in order in four of his last five innings, retiring 18 of the final 20 batters he faced. He has not allowed a run in 15 consecutive innings ... Despite losing the series, Stanford outhit the Bears 30-19 ... After starting the season with an 8-0 record, junior RHP Jeff Bruksch lost his second straight game Saturday. He got little run support as Cal pitchers Jason Dennis and Matt Brown shutout the Cardinal ... The shutout against Stanford marked the second time in a week that the Cardinal hadn't scored a run in a game, after having not been shutout in 167 consecutive games ... Stanford will try and regroup against non-conference opponents this week, taking on Santa Clara and Sacramento State.

UCLA (25-20 Overall, 6-9 Pac-10)Last Week: Long Beach State L 2-10, USC L 0-2, 6-7, 1-7 This Week: San Diego State, CAL

The Bruins continue along their worst slump of the season, having lost eight straight games. UCLA fell to Long Beach State in a midweek contest, before being swept at USC ... Called in to start after UCLA's top two starting pitchers were sidelined with ailments, senior RHP Paul Diaz put in a solid performance against USC's Mark Prior. Diaz went 7.2 innings allowing only two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks ... Diaz's outing was the highlight of the weekend for the Bruins, as they were shutdown offensively, only mustering seven runs against their rival ... In Sunday's game, senior DH Brian Baron was held hitless for only the third time this season. During UCLA's eight-game slump, Baron is batting . 361 (13-for-36) with two runs scored and seven RBI. He continues to lead the Conference in batting average at .475 ... Senior 2B Josh Canales put in good at-bats against USC, hitting .500 (6-for-12) with four runs and two RBI ... UCLA will look to get back on the winning track this week at home against San Diego State and California.

USC (32-16 Overall, 13-5 Pac-10)Last Week: Loyola Marymount L 7-13, UCLA W 2-0, 7-6, 7-1 This Week: at San Diego

With its three-game sweep over UCLA and Stanford's 1-2 series performance at Cal, USC took sole possession of first place in the Conference standings ... The Trojans also moved up in the national polls, getting closer to their preseason rankings of No. 2 in Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball and No. 3 in Baseball Weekly. This week they are ranked No. 5 in Baseball America and Baseball Weekly and No. 4 in Collegiate Baseball ... Junior RHP Mark Prior turned in his fifth complete game in six Pac-10 starts in the opener against UCLA. He notched his third shutout of the season by six-hitting the Bruins, striking out 14 batters and allowing no walks. Prior now has a 1.07 ERA with 149 strikeouts and only 12 walks in 100.2 innings pitched. Batters are hitting a mere .166 against him. He was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for the third consecutive week and for the fifth time this season, tying him with three other pitchers for most selections in one season in the Pac-10 record books ... Other Trojan pitchers did well on the hill in the other two games of the series. Senior RHP Rik Currier struck out 10 batters in route to his ninth win of the season. Currier is just nine K's away from breaking the USC and Pac-10 record for career strikeouts. Right-hander Anthony Reyes recorded a nice outing in USC's final game against UCLA. The sophomore allowed only one run on five hits with three strikeouts for the win ... Senior SS Seth Davidson also did well against the Bruins. In game one of the series, Davidson hit his first home run of the season to become USC's all-time career leader in runs scored (188). In the final game of the series he hit his fifth triple of the season and is now tied for first on the Trojan's all-time list for career triples (13). Davidson also holds USC career records in hits and stolen bases, all set this year.

WASHINGTON (24-15 Overall, 5-10 Pac-10)Last Week: Lewis-Clark State L 4-5, W 7-6, WSU W 15-8, 8-6, L 2-7 This Week: at Gonzaga, OSU

The Huskies split a pair of one-run games with Lewis-Clark State before winning their series against Washington State, 2-1 ... Washington was nearly swept by Lewis-Clark State. The Huskies were down 6-5 going into the ninth inning, but freshman C Ben Johnson hit a two-run homer with two outs to give UW the come-from-behind victory. It was his first collegiate home run ... Washington was all offense in its first two games against Washington State. The Huskies amassed 32 hits in those games with all nine Husky starters getting a hit in the first game and eight of nine starters hitting safely in the second game ... In the final game, Washington was limited to just five hits in its loss. With the loss, the Huskies had their nine-game winning streak against the Cougars broken. Washington swept five games from Washington State last year and took the first four this year in non-conference contests ... The Huskies are glad to have senior 2B Marc Rittenhouse, sophomore C Jeffferson Thiel and sophomore RHP Sean White back in action. In four games played last week, Rittenhouse went 8-for-19 (.421) with six runs scored, two RBI, a triple and home run. The Huskies are 13-3 when he is in the lineup and 11-12 without him ... With two home runs against the Cougars, sophomore LF Jay Garthwaite now has six home runs in nine career games against Washington State ... The Huskies take on Gonzaga for a midweek road series before hosting Oregon State this weekend.

WASHINGTON STATE (15-29 Overall, 6-12 Pac-10)Last Week: WASH L 8-15, 6-8, W 7-2 This Week: Lewis-Clark State

The Cougars avoided being swept at home by coming up with a 7-2 victory over the Huskies on Sunday. Washington State lost the first two games by scores of 15-8 and 8-6 ... In the opening game of the series, WSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but was down 7-6 when the game was suspended in the sixth inning due to inclement weather. Washington State continued the game the next day and lost 15-8, after the Huskies took advantage of eight Cougar errors ... Outfielders Mike Knight and Evan Hecker recorded six hits apiece against the Huskies ... Pitcher/designated hitter Garrett Alwert hit his first home run in his WSU career Saturday ... In WSU's Sunday victory, junior RHP Justin Cayetano allowed just two runs on five hits with six K's and three walks in 8.1 innings pitched. The victory marked his third win of the season ... Washington State takes a break from Conference action this week and will play Lewis-Clark State this weekend.
