No. 14 Softball Splits Double-Header With Portland State, 0-1 And 8-0

May 2, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Crystal Draper pitched her second no-hitter of the season as the No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball team topped Portland State 8-0 in the second game of Wednesday's double-header. The Vikings picked up the 1-0 victory in the first game.

Draper becomes the first OSU hurler to pitch three no-hitters in her career and recorded a perfect game earlier this season (Mar. 11) against New Mexico State.

'Crystal threw a nice game,' said Beaver head coach Kirk Walker. 'Her ball was moving well and she had great control.'

Offensively the Beavers came alive after being held scoreless and recording just four hits in the opener. All nine OSU batters reached base in the contest and Oregon State pounded 15 hits en route to scoring eight runs before the game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the 'mercy rule'.

'We were more focused from our first at-bat on in the second game,' said Walker. 'Being focused was what sparked us offensively.'

Six different Oregon State batters had at least two hits on the contest, led by a 3-for-4, two runs scored performance by junior Michelle Chariton and a 3-for-4, one-RBI effort from senior Shawna Feldt. Right fielder Michelle Notaro finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double.

Draper faced just 18 batters, striking out four and allowing just one walk on her way to earning her 25th victory (25-9) on the season.

In game one, OSU hurler Monica Hoffman pitched well, allowing just three hits while striking out eight.

'Monica pitched well enough to win,' commented Walker.

Portland State scored the game's lone run in the second inning. Catcher Gina Papasadero tripled to right field to open the inning. Papasadero's hit was to shallow right but took a wild bounce that sent the ball past outfielder Cara Maxey to the fence. Papasadero eventually scored on a two-out error by OSU second baseman Clare Burnum on a grounder by Annie Peccia.

Viking pitcher Morgan Seibert struck out eight and allowed only four Beaver hits to pick upthe victory.

The Beavers (39-19-1) and Vikings (19-33) will face off again Thursday in Portland with a single game at Erv Lind Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
