Softball Rallies To Knock Off Portland State, 4-2
May 3, 2001
PORTLAND, Ore. - No. 14 ranked Oregon State rallied for one run in each of the final four innings to earn a 4-2 victory against Portland State in Thursday's non-conference softball game.
Portland State got on the board first in the third inning due to an Oregon State error. With runners at first and second and two outs, Gina Papasadero hit a high pop-up in front of home plate which looked like a routine out, but a miscommunication in Oregon State's infield saw first baseman Steph Adams drop the ball which allowed Kiauna Anderson to score.
OSU rallied to knot the score at 1-1 in the fourth on a two-out solo home run by Shelly Prochaska down the left field line. Anderson crashed into the fence (which collapsed) on the play to actually make the catch but after discussion the hit was called a home run because it wasn't made in the field of play.
Portland State regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a one-out triple by Annie Peccia followed by a single by Marissa Smith.
The Viking lead was short-lived however, as Oregon State warmed up from the plate over the final three innings, pounding nine of its 13 hits.
'Offensively we executed at the plate and were more focused today off of Morgan (Seibert),' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We had some clutch hitting with runners in scoring position.'
A two-out rally in the fifth inning knotted the score again, as the Beavers tallied four straight singles and Brynnen Guthrie crossed the plate. With the bases loaded senior Shawna Feldt hit a shot to deep centerfield and in the same scenario as Prochaska's hit, PSU's Stephanie Hagen made the catch while crashing through the fence. What appeared to be a grand slam, was ruled a catch and the third out of the inning.
Oregon State scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth when Guthrie singled up the middle to plate Clare Burnum.
The Beavers added an insurance run in the seventh when Brooke Rutschman, who had reached on a single to leadoff the frame was knocked in by Prochaska's single down the right field line.
Prochaska finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with two RBI while Guthrie was a perfect 3-for-3. Right fielder Michelle Notaro added a pair of hits (2-for-3) while Rutschman went 2-for-4.
'Crystal and Monica combined to pitch a nice ball game,' said Walker. 'It was a good solid performance.'
The Beavers (40-19-1) return to Pacific-10 Conference action with a game against University of Washington on Friday in Seattle. Game-time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
