No. 14 Ranked Softball Downed By No. 2 UCLA, 4-1

May 6, 2001

LOS ANGELES - No. 14 ranked Oregon State could not pull off the upset as the No. 2 UCLA Bruins tallied a 4-1 victory in Sunday's Pacific-10 Conference softball game.

The Beavers fall to 40-22-1 overall and 7-10 in Pac-10 action with the loss, while UCLA improves to 53-4 on the season and 14-4 in conference play.

Similar to Saturday's Bruin victory, UCLA got on the board early with three runs in the opening inning. After a leadoff single, Natasha Watley stole second base and advanced to third after a single by Stephanie Ramos. Tairia Mims followed with a sacrifice fly to deep left field that scored Watley. Power hitter Stacey Nuveman then blasted a two-run homer over the left-centerfield fence to give the Bruins a 3-0 advantage.

Oregon State took advantage of a pair of UCLA errors in the second inning to score its lone run. Sophomore Shelly Prochaska reached on a leadoff error by Mims at first base and Traci Feldt's sacrifice bunt moved Prochaska to second. Sophomore Steph Adams followed with an infield single to Watley at shortstop, whose over-throw to first base allowed Prochaska to score.

The Bruins added another run in the third when Nuveman's single plated Mims who led off the inning with a double.

The Beavers threatened in the sixth when Brynnen Guthrie led off the frame with a double to left field but an infield single by Brooke Rutschman saw Guthrie thrown out at the plate.

Junior Crystal Draper picked up the loss to fall to 26-10 on the season, despite allowing just eight hits and striking out four.

'Other than the first inning, I think Crystal pitched a really good ball game,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'When you face a team of that caliber and you fall behind in the first inning, sometimes you try to do too much.'

Oregon State tallied five hits in the contest.

'Overall, I felt we played well but were trying too hard because we got down so quickly,' said Walker.

Oregon State returns home to host No. 3 Stanford on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.
