THIS WEEK: The Washington baseball team (27-16 overall, 7-11 in the Pac-10 Conference) continues its 10-game homestand this week with a pair of non-conference games vs. Portland (20-29), followed by a three-game Pac-10 series against Arizona State (31-16-1 overall, 9-9 in the Pac-10). The Huskies still entertain an outside shot at the postseason, though they likely need to win five of six remaining Pac-10 games, if not all six. The league slate closes out May 18-20 at Arizona. Tuesday's 6:30 game vs. Portland will air on radio in the Seattle area on KSRB AM-1150, though Wednesday's 4:00 p.m. game vs. the Pilots and all three vs. Arizona State (Saturday through Monday, 1 p.m. each day) will not air on radio. SERIES HISTORY: Washington holds a 62-38-1 series advantage over Portland, a longtime member of the Pac-10 Northern Division (1982-95). The Huskies have won five in a row over the Pilots, including a pair of games earlier this year. April 17 at Portland, Bryan Johnson hit a two-run, two-out double in the 11th to lead the Huskies to a 4-2 win. The following day, the Huskies held off a Pilot threat to win, 5-4. UW head coach Ken Knutson is 25-10 all-time vs. Portland.

COACH 'K': In eight-plus seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, Ken Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two second-place finishes and three NCAA Regionals. His career overall record stands at 312-201 (.608). With those 312 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 151-58 (.722) record in home games. He is 137-91 (.601) in conference games. Knutson has coached 35 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in eight seasons, and has been named league caoch of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistant coaches Joe Ross, Ed Gustafson, and Joe Weis and undergraduate assistant Daniel Jahn.

COMING BACK OFF THE DL: The middle of the 2001 Washington baseball season was most notable for the number of big injuries and the games they forced several important players to miss. In a two-week rash of injuries, the Huskies lost their starting second baseman, center fielder and catcher, as well as their No. 1 starting pitcher to injury. However, in the last two weeks, all four of those players have returned. Senior 2B Marc Rittenhouse, a four-year starter, suffered a ligament injury to his left thumb prior to the season starting, but played the first 13 games before having surgery March 15. He came back April 25 vs. Lewis-Clark State. Jefferson Thiel, a freshman All-America catcher last year, suffered a ligament tear in his throwing elbow and sat out 15 games from March 27 until his return April 25 vs. L-C State. Brandon Jacobson, a sophomore CF, suffered a hand/wrist injury March 21 vs. Washington State. He sat out 15 games before coming back to play April 17 vs. Portland. Finally, sophomore RHP Sean White, who had emerged as the No. 1 starter on the mound, came out of the March 25 Stanford game after one inning due to shoulder tendonitis. He came back Tuesday, April 24, against Lewis-Clark State after missing, perhaps, four starts.

STILL YOUNG PUPS: While Washington is fielding a much more experienced team than it did last year, it's still a very young club. If you are to break down the starting players so far this year, you'll find that freshman or sophomores have earned two-thirds of the starts. Going with the notion that 10 players start each game (pitcher and DH included), and that the Huskies have played 43 games so far, 226 starts have gone to sophomores and 64 to freshmen, for a total of 290, or 67 percent of the 430 total starts.

FRIENDLY CONFINES: Washington was very tough at home in the 1990s, posting a mark of 160-52 (.755) over those 10 seasons. Under coach Ken Knutson, the Huskies have posted a remarkable 151-58 record in home games, good for a .722 mark. In 1998, the Huskies moved into Husky Ballpark and have notched a 72-36 (.667) record so far. In three seasons, the Huskies have averaged 30 home games a year after usually having played 15 to 20 each season at old Graves Field. This season, the Dawgs are scheduled to play 25 home games.

CUBA TRIP: Last September, the Husky baseball team travelled to Cuba for a week of baseball. The Dawgs were to play four games against the Cubans, with a fifth game pitting two mixed teams (half Huskies, half Cubans) against one another. Washington went 2-2 against teams made up of Cuban pros and the mixed game was rained out. UW was the first major college team to play in Cuba.
