Men's Golf Prepares For NCAA Western Regionals

May 11, 2001

BERKELEY - Cal heads to Corvallis, Ore., on May 17-19 to compete at the NCAA Western Regionals. This is the fifth consecutive trip to the Regionals for the Golden Bears, who have also made three straight appearances at the NCAA championships.

Cal is one of nine Pac-10 teams that advanced to NCAA Regionals this season. Others joining the Bears in the Western Regional are: Arizona State, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington.

The rest of the field includes: New Mexico, BYU, San Diego State, Colorado State, Fresno State, University of Nevada at Reno, UNLV, Pepperdine, Pacific, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Tennessee, UC Irvine, Austin Peay, Oral Roberts, Weber State, Detroit Mercy and Navy.

The Bears have had an up and down spring season. Cal started strong with a season-opening second-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Following a disappointing 15th-place showing at the John Burns Intercollegiate and a 12th-place finish at the Cleveland Golf Classic, Cal found its rhythm and posted two, top-5 finishes. The team placed third at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational and fifth at the Western Intercollegiate.

Desimone has remained consistent in his lineup throughout the year, playing Peter Tomasulo, Dong Yi, Walter Chun and Jesse Ruda in each tournament of the spring. The wildcard has been the team's fifth slot, where the Bears have played either Lance Torrey or sophomore James Hahn. Following Torrey's strong showing at the Pac-10 championships, Desimone opted to move the freshman up to the fourth spot.

Cal struggled at the Pac-10 championships this year, finishing ninth in the conference. Still, Desimone likes the Bears chances heading into the NCAA Western Regional as the eighth seed in the bracket.

This year marks the fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Western Regionals for the Golden Bears. Cal is also riding a three-season streak of consecutive appearances at the NCAA championships. Although this was Desimone's youngest group of golfers since 1985, he's pleased to see the progress the team's made during the season.

'I'm happy where we're at right now,' Desimone said. 'As far as overall course management, this is one of the best teams I've ever coached.'

Desimone has selected the following six players to represent Cal at the NCAA Western Regionals:
