May 11, 2001

EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball team fell 7-4 to No. 6 California in front of 205 fans at Howe Field Friday afternoon. The Bears improve to 49-13 overall, 6-12 Pac-10, while Oregon drops to 28-38, 1-18.

'I felt like we battled hard and played mentally tough ball today,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'I thought we put ourselves in a position to win late in the game, but Cal played a great ball game until the end.'

California scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by third baseman Candace Harper to take the early lead, but Oregon sophomore Alyssa Laux hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence that scored Lynsey Haij to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead heading into the second inning.

Both teams remained scoreless for the next three innings. The Bears extended their lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Short stop Paige Bowie started the scoring rally with a two out solo home run. Pauline Duenas singled to left field and Harper followed with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by Oregon. Duenas scored on the throw. First baseman Veronica Nelson drove in Harper with a single to right field in California's next at bat.

Seeming to be up to the challenge, Oregon sophomore Andrea Vidlund hit her 11th home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the gap, 4-3. Senior Triawn Custer singled to left field and sophomore Amber Hutchison singled to shortstop, which advanced Custer to third. Kristi Hall drove in Custer with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 4-4.

The Bears offense continued to rally in the seventh inning as they scored three runs to secure the victory.

Oregon junior Connie McMurren (9-18) took the loss for Oregon and Cal pitcher Nicole DiSalvio (18-6) picked up the win.

Oregon hosts Stanford in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon to wrap up the regular season. Ticket holders to the softball game can get into the track meet free. The track meet begins at 4:30 p.m. at Hayward Field.
