UA Hosts NCAA Region 1 Softball

TUCSON - The University of Arizona will play host to NCAA Region 1 softball Thursday through Sunday, with the winner of the six-team regional qualifying for the Women's College World Series May 24-28 in Oklahoma City.
Arizon (57-4), received an automatic bid as the Pac-10 Champion after recording a 19-2 record in league play. The Cats will play St. Peter's (39-18) at 5 p.m. Thursday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Cal State Fullerton (46-12) will meet Texas Tech in the opening game at 12 noon Thursday, followed by Hawai'i (45-5) vs. Southwest Texas (49-10) at 2:30 p.m.
The losers of the CSUF-Texas Tech and Arizona-St. Peter's games will play in the fourth game Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with the loser of that game eliminated in the double-elimination format.
Games Friday will be held at the same times as Thursday's action, with a complete tournament bracket to be issued early Monday.
UA beat UCLA Friday to clinch the Pac-10 title then swept Washington in a doubleheader Saturday to finish the regular season.
Other sites, and hosts, in the 48-team NCAA tournament are Los Angeles (UCLA), Baton Rouge, La. (Louisiana State), Tuscaloosa, Ala. (Alabama), Norman, Okla. (defending NCAA champion Oklahoma), Palo Alto, Calif. (Stanford), Iowa City, Iowa (Iowa), and Tallahassee, Fla. (Florida State).
Arizona is one of seven Pac-10 teams in the tournament along with UCLA, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington, California and Arizona State.
