May 14, 2001

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford's Sunken Diamond has been selected as one of 16 regional sites for the 2001 NCAA Baseball Championships. The event will take place Friday-Sunday, May 25-27, 2001. The Cardinal will be hosting its sixth consecutive NCAA Regional dating back to 1995 and the 10th in school history. Game times are as follows: Friday (3:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m.), Saturday (11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m.), Sunday (1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., if necessary). Tickets can be obtained by visiting the Stanford Ticket Office at Gate 2 of Stanford Stadium or by calling 1-800-STANFORD (Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.).

'We're excited and thrilled to host this great event again,' said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. 'The NCAA Regional has been an excellent experience in the past and with our new facility we expect it to be even better this year. Our fans and all of those in the community have always shown tremendous support for the NCAA Regionals we've hosted at Sunken Diamond in previous years.'

'I don't know if it is a huge competitive advantage for our team to host the event,' continued Marquess. 'But, we are happy that we don't have to travel. It's nice to stay at home, especially with our players still in school.'

The 16 regional hosts and sites announced Monday included Cal State Fullerton (Fullerton, CA), Clemson (Clemson, SC), East Carolina (Wilson, NC), Florida State (Tallahassee, FL), Georgia (Athens, GA), Louisiana State (Baton Rouge, LA), Miami (Coral Gables, FL), Nebraska (Lincoln, NE), Notre Dame (South Bend, IN), Ohio State (Columbus, OH), Rice (Houston, TX), South Carolina (Columbia, SC), USC (Los Angeles, CA), Stanford (Stanford, CA), Tennessee (Knoxville, TN) and Tulane (New Orleans, LA). All NCAA Regionals will be played on campus sites other than the event hosted by East Carolina, which will be played at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, North Carolina.

The entire 64-team field for the 2001 NCAA Division I Baseball Championships, with first-round pairings and site assignments, will be announced in a live, half-hour telecast on ESPN Monday, May 21, 2001 (12:00 p.m., PDT).

Stanford (39-14, 14-7 Pac-10) will conclude its 2001 regular season schedule with a three-game series at Washington State (15-34, 6-14 Pac-10) this Friday-Sunday, May 18-20 (6:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m.). The Cardinal is currently in second-place in the Pac-10, 2.0 games behind first-place USC (36-16, 16-5 Pac-10).
