Pac-10 Track & Field Championships Media Lunch
May 15, 2001
BERKELEY - Following are selected quotes from Cal Director of Track and Field Erv Hunt from Tuesday's Pac-10 Track and Field Championships media lunch held at Blakes on campus.
The Golden Bears host the conference meet Sat.-Sun., May 19-20, at Edwards Stadium on campus.
'In terms of us in terms of the Pac-10s, we're just hoping we can do better than we've done the last few years. You have to have a certain amount of athletes and a certain amount of quality athletes to do things like that.
'We've had a lot of injuries this year, but I do think right now that if we have a good meet, and it depends on what kids are like coming out of finals, we actually can do better this year.
'Outside of the top four teams on the men's side, I think that from that point on whoever has the best meet is going to end up fifth. And, on the women's side, there's actually a few teams down at the bottom. We have a very good chance of finishing around sixth in terms of the women. Oregon and Washington are not overly strong teams right now. UCLA and USC are going to battle it out for first. Arizona and Stanford and Washington State I'm thinking are the next few teams.
'On the men's side, everyone was thinking it was strictly going to be USC and UCLA. But, Stanford has a pretty good shot. It depends on the distance runners. They're actually going to score some pretty good points in the field events, but they can score a lot of points in the distance events. The fourth team will probably be Arizona State. After that if you look at it, it just depends.'
