THIS WEEKEND: The Washington baseball team (29-20 overall, 7-14 in the Pac-10 Conference) puts the wraps on the 2001 season this weekend as it travels to Tucson to take on the Arizona Wildcats (30-23 overall, 9-12 Pac-10) in a three-game league series at Sancet Field. The Huskies and Wildcats play at 7:00 p.m. both Friday and Saturday evenings before the season finale qat 1:00 p.m. Sunday. None of the games will air on radio in the Seattle area, nor is the U of A broadcast available on the internet. The Huskies, who would only be 10-14 in league with a series sweep, hold no hope of making the postseason, though Arizona could finish .500 in the conference and perhaps sneak in. Here's a look at this weekend's series, with probable UW starting pitchers:

Fri., May 18: UW at Arizona, 7:00 p.m. -- RHP Jeff Carlsen (2-2, 6.26)Sat. May 19: UW at Arizona, 7:00 p.m. -- RHP Shawn Kohn (6-1, 2.22)Sun., May 20: UW at Arizona, 7:00 p.m. -- starter TBA

SERIES HISTORY: Washington and Arizona have only played one another seven times -- once at the 1992 NCAA Regional and then in three-game league series in 1999 and 2000, after the two divisions of the Pac-10 were consolidated. The Huskies hold a 4-3 series advantage, having won the game in 1992 and taken two of three in 1999. The Wildcats won two of three in Seattle last season. Washington is 3-1 against the Wildcats in Tucson. In '92, the Pac-10 North champion Huskies upset top-seed and Southern Division champ Arizona, 6-5, in front of 4,853 fans. Chris Berg went seven and two-thirds for the win and Eric Schmidt saved it as the 'Cats scored four in the ninth. In '99, the Huskies, after a rainout, swept a doubleheader 6-3 and 2-1, as Jeff Carlsen tossed a four-hitter in the second game. The U of A came back to take game three, 17-4. In 2000, Carlsen out-dueled Ben Diggins in the opener, winning 6-2 with another four-hitter, but Arizona won the next two, 14-8 and 3-2.

COACH 'K': In eight-plus seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, Ken Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two second-place finishes and three NCAA Regionals. His career overall record stands at 314-205 (.605). With those 314 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 153-62 (.712) record in home games. He is 137-93 (.596) in conference games. Knutson has coached 35 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in eight seasons, and has been named league caoch of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistant coaches Joe Ross, Ed Gustafson, and Joe Weis and undergraduate assistant Daniel Jahn.

COMING BACK OFF THE DL: The middle of the 2001 Washington baseball season was most notable for the number of big injuries and the games they forced several important players to miss. In a two-week rash of injuries, the Huskies lost their starting second baseman, center fielder and catcher, as well as their No. 1 starting pitcher to injury. However, in the month or so, all four of those players have returned. Senior 2B Marc Rittenhouse, a four-year starter, suffered a ligament injury to his left thumb prior to the season starting, but played the first 13 games before having surgery March 15. He came back April 25 vs. Lewis-Clark State. Jefferson Thiel, a freshman All-America catcher last year, suffered a ligament tear in his throwing elbow and sat out 15 games from March 27 until his return April 25 vs. L-C State. Brandon Jacobson, a sophomore CF, suffered a hand/wrist injury March 21 vs. Washington State. He sat out 15 games before coming back to play April 17 vs. Portland. Finally, sophomore RHP Sean White, who had emerged as the No. 1 starter on the mound, came out of the March 25 Stanford game after one inning due to shoulder tendonitis. He came back Tuesday, April 24, against Lewis-Clark State after missing, perhaps, four starts.

STILL YOUNG PUPS: While Washington is fielding a much more experienced team than it did last year, it's still a very young club. If you are to break down the starting players so far this year, you'll find that freshman or sophomores have earned two-thirds of the starts. Going with the notion that 10 players start each game (pitcher and DH included), and that the Huskies have played 49 games so far, 256 starts have gone to sophomores and 74 to freshmen, for a total of 330, or 67 percent of the 490 total starts.

CUBA TRIP: Last September, the Husky baseball team travelled to Cuba for a week of baseball. The Dawgs were to play four games against the Cubans, with a fifth game pitting two mixed teams (half Huskies, half Cubans) against one another. Washington went 2-2 against teams made up of Cuban pros and the mixed game was rained out. UW was the first major college team to play in Cuba.
