Women's Basketball Recruit Selected to USA Basketball Junior National Team Trials

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Arizona women's basketball recruit Shawntinice Polk is among 30 players that have accepted invitations to the 2001 USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Trials.

Polk, a 6-foot-4 center from Hanford, Calif., will join the Wildcats as a freshman for the 2001-02 season. A product of Hanford High School, Polk is coming off a senior year that saw her average 16.1 points, 13.1 rebounds and 4.1 blocked shots per game while leading Hanford to its first-ever CIF Division II state championship. She was a first team USA Today All-American and was one of only 20 players chosen to play in the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game in April.

USA Basketball announced Thursday that 30 of the top players aged 19-and-younger (born on or after January 1, 1982) have accepted invitations to the trials, which will be held June 15-18 in Colorado Springs. The invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee, chaired by University of Texas Senior Associate AthleticsDirector Chris Plonsky. Following the four-day Trials, which will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, the Committee will select finalists for the 12-member 2001 USA Women's Junior World Championship Team.

The 2001 USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Trials begin Friday, June 15 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. (all times MDT). Sessions will follow from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 3:00-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 4:30-7:00 p.m on Sunday, June 17, and the Trials will conclude on Monday, June 18 with a session from 8:00-10:00 a.m. Finalists for the 2001 USA Junior squad will be announced following the June 18 session.
