No. 2 Seed Softball Advances To Championship Game Of South Regional After Dramatic 1-0 Win Over Top-Seeded Florida State
May 19, 2001
TALLAHASSEE, FL - A senior Paige Bowie suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh scoring senior Amber Phillips from third gave the second-seeded California Golden Bears a 1-0 win over the top-seeded Florida State Seminoles. Junior Jocelyn Forest pitched excellent once again, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks to earn her second win in the tournament and 27th on the year with only seven losses. The Bears improve to 52-15 overall and have now set a school record with 52 wins in a season. FSU falls to 56-11.
With one out in the top of the second, Brandi Stuart doubled to left center for the fist hit in the game for the Seminoles. Stuart later stole second still with one out, but Forest got the next two batters to pop out and strikeout swinging, respectively, to end the threat.
Cal attempted a rally of its own in fourth. With one out, sophomore Veronica Nelson walked and moved to second on a single to right by sophomore Eryn Manahan. With runners on first and second, FSU pitcher Jen White-Stokes got sophomore Courtney Scott to pop out and senior Amber Phillips to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Forest got out of more trouble in the fifth. With one out, Monique Marier reached on a Bear fielding error and was replaced by Skyla Cox to run at first, who moved to second on another Cal error. Cox advanced to third on a groundout, but was stranded there when Forest got Staci Brandon to fly out to sophomore Kristen Morley in right.
Cal once again mounted a rally in the sixth but was turned away. Nelson walked with two outs and moved to third on a double to right center by Manahan. Scott grounded out to second for the final out in the inning.
The Seminoles put runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, but Forest once again escaped danger when she got Natalie Bennett to pop out to junior Candace Harper at third.
In the seventh, Phillips led off the inning with a double to left center. Sophomore Mikella Pedretti flied out to right which brought Morley to the plate, who sent a ball up the middle that was mishandled by the second baseman, allowing her to reach first and Phillips to move to third. Bowie, after seeing a strike, placed a perfect bunt in front of the plate, allowing Phillips to score the winning run.
'Paige bunted the ball perfectly and Amber had a great slide at the plate score the winning run,' said head coach Diane Ninemire. 'We executed when we needed to especially in the tense situations like we had today.'
The Bears advance to the championship game of the South Regional and will play tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET between the winner of the Florida State versus Florida Atlantic loser's bracket game played later tonight.
