Bowlby Takes Silver

May 22, 2001

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Oregon State's Andy Bowlby wrestled his way to the silver medal in the Freestyle 286-pound class at the Pan-American Championships held May 19-20. Bowlby (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS), representing the Orange Crush Mat Club, helped the United States to a second-place team finish.

Bowlby was beaten in the final 5-0 by Cuba's Alexis Rodriguez, a former world champion and the bronze medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Bowlby, who just completed his sophomore season at Oregon State, beat Carlos Panaco of Canada 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Renato Sobral of Brazil 10-1 in the semifinals.

The Pan-Am Championships are held three of every four years, in non-Pan-Am Games years. The event features the best wrestlers from North America, Central America and South America.

The U.S. team was comprised of the winners of the 2001 University National Freestyle Championships, which were held earlier this spring.
