STONE MOUNTAIN, GA - The Cal women's tennis players began individual competition yesterday, May 22, as the Bears featured three players in singles, and one team in doubles. Through the middle of today's competition, only one doubles team remains. Freshman Raquel Kops-Jones, who is paired with senior Anita Kurimay in doubles, defeated Vanderbilt's Julie Ditty and Kate Burson, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round of competition. Second round doubles action continues today, as Cal's duo of Kops-Jones and Kurimay look to win Cal's fourth consecutive NCAA doubles title.

Kops-Jones, who was recently named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and ITA Regional Rookie of the Year, advanced in both singles and in doubles to the second round, before falling in singles to Bea Bielik of Wake Forest, 7-6, 6-4. Kops-Jones was the only Bear to advance to the second round in singles, as she defeated Renate Stoop of Boise State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Co-captains Christina Fusano and Anita Kurimay, both fell in the first round of singles competition, May 22. Fusano was defeated in straight sets by Kathy Sell of Duke, 6-3, 7-6, while Kurimay, who fell in the first round of singles last year, fell in this year's opening round to Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.
