Softball Loses Series Opener to No. 1 Arizona, 3-2

May 24, 2001

OKLAHOMA CITY - Tony Mascarenas' three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning provided all the offense Arizona would need as the top-seeded Wildcats edged No. 8 seed Cal, 3-2, in their Women's College World Series Opener Thursday.

The Bears (53-17) next play Michigan in an elimination game at 9 a.m. PT Saturday. The game will be televised live on ESPN.

Cal's Jocelyn Forest no-hit UA through five innings before surrendering a single to lead off the sixth.

The Bears scored twice in the seventh inning on a single by Candace Harper and a two-run homer by first baseman Veronica Nelson.
