Three Softball Players Earn All-America Honors

May 24, 2001

SEATTLE - Three Washington softball players, freshman pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.), sophomore shortstop Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) and senior outfielder Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) have been named third-team All-Americans Wednesday by Louisville Slugger and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). It is the first such honor for both Bollinger and Hauxhurst, while it is the second for Clark, who was named to the second team a year ago.

Bollinger finished the season with a 36-8 overall record, tallying UW season records for wins, innings pitched (287.0) and games started (39). The 2001 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year led the country for most of the season in victories, while also garnering first-team all-conference honors. Bollinger joins Clark and former standout Becky Newbry (1996-99) as the only true freshmen All-Americans in UW history.

Clark became the fifth player in Husky history to earn All-America honors more than once in her career. The 5-11 shortstop was second on the team in batting in 2001 with a .379 mark and led the UW in several other offensive categories, including home runs (14), runs scored (51) and slugging percentage (.734). A two-time, first-team all-Pac-10 honoree, Clark was named to the all-Pacific region second team last week.

Hauxhurst, a first-team all-region selection, led the UW in batting for most of the 2001 season, posting a .386 average, while leading the team in hits with 73. The senior co-captain also has reached base in 57 of 63 games, while recording a pair of double-digit hit streaks.

Overall, Washington now boasts 22 All-Americans in its short nine-year history.

The Huskies finished out their 2001 campaign with a 40-23 overall record, falling to reigning national champion Oklahoma in the NCAA Region 5 tournament final.
