May 26, 2001

ATHENS, Ga. - Stanford University sophomores Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships on Saturday afternoon at the University of Georgia.

In the NCAA Singles Championships, K.J. Hippesnteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) won his third round match but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Lipsky and Martin, who are ranked 14th in the nation, improved to 36-6 on the season with a straight set upset of No. 5-8 seeds Michael Kogan and Mikko Viljanen of Tulane. The Stanford sophomores beat the 12th-ranked Tulane duo 6-2, 6-3. Lipsky and Martin have won eight of their 10 matches against nationally-ranked opponents this season.

Lipsky and Martin now advance to a Sunday morning quarterfinal match against second-ranked and fourth-seeded Amer Delic and Graydon Oliver of Illinois. The winner of that match will play in Sunday evening's semifinals against the winner of the contest between 16th-ranked Trace Fielding/Jimmy Haney of TCU and second-seeded and fourth-ranked Matias Boeker/Travis Parrott of host Georgia.

In other doubles action, the Cardinal's Hippensteel and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) dropped a three-set heartbreaker to top-ranked and top-seeded Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly of Virginia. Montgomery and Vahaly won the first set 6-1, before the 15th-ranked Hippensteel and Kim won the second set 6-4. Hippensteel and Kim cut a 5-2 third set deficit to 5-4 before the Virginia team closed out the match. Hippensteel and Kim conclude their season with a 21-6 record.

In the singles draw, Hippensteel started off the day with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win over 25th-ranked Peter Handoyo of Tennessee. The Cardinal junior, who is ranked 18th and a No. 9-16 seed, then fell 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to seventh-ranked and seventh-seeded Guilaume Legat of South Carolina. Hippensteel, who was the 1999 NCAA Doubles Champion (w/Ryan Wolters) and 2000 NCAA Singles Semifinalist, finishes the season 35-9.
