Kamimura Named Second-Team All-American
May 29, 2001
Seattle, WA - For the second time in her career, Washington women's golfer Kelli Kamimura (Burlington, Wash.) has been named an All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association. Kamimura was named a second-team selection after finishing 29th at last week's NCAA Women's Championships at the Mission Inn Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Only 22 players receive either first- or second-team All-America honors.
Kamimura shot an 11-over 299 to record the best 72-hole score by a Husky at the NCAA Championship. Her finish was the highest by a Washington golfer at the event. Kamimura's score led the Huskies to a 16th-place finish, equaling Washington's best showing at the NCAAs.
Kamimura, a junior, was an honorable mention All-American as a freshman in 1998-99.
'This is a tremendous honor for Kelli,' says Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'She had a terrific season for us, winning a pair of tournaments and posting our highest finish ever at the NCAAs. There are only a handful of golfers honored each year as All-Americans and she was very deserving this year.'
Washington sophomore Michelle Grafos (Spokane, Wash.) was named to the 2001 NGCA All American Scholar Golf Team. Members of the team must have an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher. Grafos is a political science major at Washington.
'The women's golf all-academic team has the highest standard of any scholar-athlete team for any sport,' Mulflur says. 'It takes more than just a GPA. You have to be a very solid golfer, you have to be active on your campus and you have to have several recommendations for the award. Michelle is a tremendous representative for the Husky golf program and I'm happy she was recognized for a tremendous year as a student-athlete and member of our golf team.'
