Women Of Troy Post Strong Showing At NCAAs

The Women of Troy held their own on the first day of competition and couldstand to benefit from miscues on the part of the UCLA women. USC qualifiedthree of its big guns-Brigita Langerholc in the 800m, Kinshasa Davis in the200m and the 400-meter relay squad-but missed out on a chance to open up abig lead in the team standings when Aleksandra Deren (800m) and AngelaWilliams (200m) failed to make it to the finals of their respective events.Still, the Women of Troy remain, along with UCLA, in the driver's seat in therace for the women's team title.

Field Finals--
Discus: Junior Cynthia Ademiluyi came within seven inches of advancing tothe finals of the discus, placing 10th with a best mark of 166-1.

Track Prelims-

400-meter relay: The Women of Troy 400-meter relay squad-the defending NCAAchampions-advanced to the finals of the 400-meter relay, finishing second toSouth Carolina in heat three with a time of 43.74, the fifth fastest time ofthe day.

800-meter run: Senior Brigita Langerholc, who sported the nation's fastesttime in the 800 meters going into the NCAAs, cruised to a win in her heat.Langerholc ran 2:05.69 (the third-fastest time of the day) to advance to thefinals scheduled for Friday afternoon. Junior Aleksandra Deren, who had thenation's fourth fastest time coming in, finished a disappointing eighth inher heat with a time of 2:13.40 and did not advance to the finals.

200-meter dash: Junior Kinshasa Davis, who finished second in the 200m atlast year's NCAAs, blazed to a wind-aided 22.79 to win heat four of thewomen's 200-meter dash and advance to the finals on Saturday. Junior AngelaWilliams ran 23.11 to finish second in her heat. With only the top eightrunners advancing, the two-time defending NCAA 100m champ missed qualifyingfor the finals of the 200m by two-one-hundredths (.02) of a second.

Davis on her finish: 'I needed that (the win) to get moving. Now I just needto do what I have to do and just run my race.'

Looking ahead to Thursday for the Women of Troy--

100-meter hurdles-Junior Natasha Neal will compete in the prelims of the highhurdles.

100-meter dash-Junior Angela Williams begins her quest for a thirdconsecutive NCAA 100m title, joining senior Candace Young in the prelims ofthat event.

Shot Put-Junior Cynthia Ademiluyi and freshman L'Orangerie Crawford will tryto pick up some key points for the Women of Troy in the finals of the women'sshot put.

1500-meter run-Junior Lucyna Ligaj will compete in the semifinals of the1500-meter run.

1600-meter relay-The Women of Troy relay squad will run in the semifinals ofthis event.
