McKnight Accepts Assistant Coaching Post at Cal

May 31, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. - University of Oregon women's basketball assistant coach Kirsten McKnight accepted a position Thursday with California.

McKnight, a Larkspur, Calif., native, will be the top assistant and recruiting coordinator under second-year coach Caren Horstmeyer.

'I'm obviously excited about this opportunity to further my career,' McKnight said. 'It's a goal of mine to be a head coach at the Division I level. To move closer to this goal early in my career is exciting.'

McKnight, 25, spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Oregon under Jody Runge, who resigned in early May. McKnight also lettered four years for the Ducks at guard from 1994-98.

'It's been a difficult decision to make because I've absolutely loved my experience at Oregon,' McKnight said. 'It won't be easy to leave this community, the players and everybody who makes Oregon women's basketball a premier program on the West Coast.'

Oregon, which won consecutive Pac-10 titles in 1999 and 2000, finished last year with a 17-12 record and advanced to its eighth straight NCAA Tournament, losing 89-82 in overtime to Iowa in the first round.
