Men's Crew Teams to Race in Petite Finals in Saturday's Final Day of the National Championships
June 1, 2001
Corvallis, Ore. - The three Oregon State University crews competing at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships on the Cooper River, will be racing in the Petite Finals in Saturday's final day of competition. The Petite Finals feature crews racing for seventh through 12th place.
The No. 16 men's varsity eight clocked in at 6:06.55 over the 2,000-meter course, placing fourth in their semi-final. The top three crews advanced to the Grand Finals.
'We thought it would come down to Cornell, Dartmouth, and us for third place,' head coach Dave Reischman said. 'We were a little off our rhythm, but part of the reason for that was Cornell was so fast and we were trying to close the gap. We just simply got beat by a better crew today.'
The second varsity rowed a time 6:03.53 over the 2,000-meter course to finish second in one of two semi-finals.
'This crew had their best race of the year by far,' Reischman said. 'We just ran into Cornell again, which had a terrific day.'
The freshman eight will also compete in the Petite Finals, after finishing fourth in their semi-final at 6:08.63, missing qualifying for the finals by just over one-half second
'All three crews raced extremely hard, they all just came up a little short,' Reischman added. 'I can't fault any of the crews effort. The seniors are a little disappointed about the varsity eight not making it to the Grand Finals, but I know they will be ready to go for the Petite Finals.'
The varsity eight is in quest of improving on the program's best ever finish in the championships, eighth in 1999.
'If someone would have told me at the beginning of the year, or even at the beginning of the week, that all three crews had an opportunity for a top-10 finish, I would have taken it,' Reischman concluded. 'We are going to have race very well to accomplish three top-10 showings, there are teams we are racing against that we have never defeated.'
