USC, STANFORD ADVANCE TO COLLEGE WORLD SERIESTrojans and Cardinal head to Omaha for third time in last four seasons
STANFORD and USC advanced to the College World Series, June 8-16 in Omaha, Nebraska ... The Pac-10 and SEC are the only conferences to have more than one team headed to Omaha ... The Pac-10 sends two teams to the College World Series for the 24th time, last being in 2000 when both STANFORD and USC went to Omaha ... This is the 51st year (of possible 55) that the Pac-10 has sent at least one team to the CWS ... The Pac-10 has won 24 national championships, three times as many as the next conference (Big 12, eight) ... A Pac-10 team has been runner-up 11 times ... Pac-10 teams have played each other for the national championship six times, last being in 1998 when USC defeated ARIZONA STATE for the title ... USC has won 12 titles, the most of any school all-time. Arizona State and Louisiana State are the next closest with five championships apiece ... For the first time ever in Stanford baseball history, the Cardinal is making its third straight CWS appearance. It will be its 13th all-time appearance ... USC is making its second consecutive trip to Omaha, and its 21st trip all-time ... USC won its first Pac-10 Championship since 1996 ... For the ninth time, four Pac-10 teams were invited to the tournament ... STANFORD plays Tulane (55-11) on Friday at 2 p.m. CT to kick off College World Series play ... The Green Waves were an upset winner over Louisiana State ... USC takes on Georgia (47-20) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT.

Stanford heads to the College World Series for the third consecutive year. It is the first time in Cardinal baseball history that the team has gone to Omaha three straight times ... The Cardinal is Omaha-bound by virtue of a 3-2 win over South Carolina in an elimination game. The game was Stanford's fourth elimination game victory in a row ... Six of Stanford's seven postseason games in 2001 have been decided by one run. The Cardinal has posted a 4-2 record in those contests ... Stanford has won 13 of its last 16 games ... Sophomore RHP Jeremy Guthrie tossed Stanford's first complete game of the postseason in the Cardinal's first victory over South Carolina. He earned the win after allowing no earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk ... Junior 3B Andy Topham did well at the plate for Stanford last weekend. The junior went 5-for-12 (.416) while scoring one run and driving in five. His two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie in Sunday's elimination game ... Junior 2B Chris O'Riordan also shined offensively hitting .500 (7-for-14) with two runs, one RBI, double and home run. O'Riordan and freshman outfielder Carlos Quentin both tied career-highs with a four-hit game in the Super Regional ... Stanford plays in the College World Series opener against Tulane ... Stanford has reached the 40-win plateau for the seventh straight season and 15th time during head coach Mark Marquess' 25-year reign ... Marquess posted his 1,000 career victory Feb. 9 against Florida State. He became just the 23rd coach in Division I baseball history to ever reach the elite milestone ... The Cardinal is 13-5 against ranked opponents this season. Stanford has been ranked in the top-10 all season and was tabbed No. 1 by Baseball America for six straight weeks during the months of March and April ... The Cardinal is led offensively this season by O'Riordan. He paces Stanford in batting average (.374), runs (60, t3rd in Pac-10), hits (99, 2nd), total bases (156, 2nd), on base percentage (.446, t6th), slugging percentage (.589) and stolen bases (16, t4th). He is tied for first on the team with 17 doubles and 12 home runs ... Quentin was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Quentin is hitting .352 and leads the Cardinal in hit by pitches (13). He ranks second on the squad in hits (82), RBI (51), total bases (128) and slugging percentage (.549) ... Stanford has led the Pac-10 in pitching all season long, bolstered by the arms of Guthrie, junior RHP Jeff Bruksch and junior LHP Mike Gosling. Those pitchers have a combined record of 28-8 with 291 strikeouts in 317.0 innings pitched ... The Cardinal is making its 13th NCAA College World Series appearance.

USC defeated Florida International to earn a College World Series berth for the second consecutive season. This will be the Trojans first back-to-back trip to Omaha since the national championship years of 1973 and 1974 ... The Trojans outscored Florida International 11-1 in the two victories ... Junior RHP Mark Prior threw a complete game seven-hitter for the first win in the Super Regional. He allowed just one run while striking out nine and walking none. His notched his 183rd strikeout of the season in the sixth-inning which set a new USC and Pac-10 single-season strikeout record. He has 189 on the year ... Prior was helped offensively as sophomore 2B Anthony Lunetta, senior SS Seth Davidson and junior 1B Bill Peavey each had a pair of hits. One of Lunetta's hits was a three-run homer ... USC's second win against Florida International marked its 200th postseason victory ... In that game, senior RHP Rik Currier threw a five-hit shutout. He walked just two batters, while striking out 11. Currier is 12-2 on the season ... Prior was selected by the Chicago Cubs as the No. 2 overall pick in Major League Baseball's amateur draft. He was named Collegiate Baseball's Player of the Year becoming just the third Pac-10 player to win the award. Prior has a 14-1 record with a 1.50 ERA. He has 189 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 131.2 innings pitched ... USC's team batting average of .299 is the lowest since the 1992 season (.274) ... Lowering their team ERA to 3.34, USC is tied with Stanford for the first time this year in leading the Conference in pitching. The Trojans' ERA is the lowest since the 1978 season. The team won the national championship that year ... The Trojans set a new school season record for strikeouts, which stands at 580 ... USC wins its first Conference title since 1996 and fourth under head coach Mike Gillespie ... Gillespie recently won his 600th game against Long Beach State, May 15. He has a career record of 607-329-2 ... USC won seven of its eight Pac-10 series this season ... The Trojans have won 16 of their last 20 games. They were on a
nine-game winning streak before losing to Oregon State in the final week of the regular season. It was their longest winning streak of the season ... Prior, the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, leads the Pac-10 in ERA, opposing batting average, strikeouts, innings pitched and wins. Among national statistics, Prior's ERA is third, and he also ranks third in strikeouts per nine innings and is tied for fifth in wins. Prior is a perfect 7-0 in Pac-10 games, going all nine innings in five of those contests. He has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game 12 times this season. He has notched 15 strikeouts in a game once and 14 four times. Prior was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week five times this year and was a National Pitcher of the Week selection twice ... USC's pitching packs a tough 1-2 punch, as its second day starter, Currier is also one of the Pac-10's top pitchers. Currier boasts a 2.39 ERA. He has 115 strikeouts in 113 innings pitched. Currier recently set the new USC and Pac-10 record for career strikeouts. He has 444 K's as a Trojan ... USC is led offensively by junior CF Brian Barre. Barre paces the Trojans in hitting (.338), slugging percentage (.548), totals bases (120), runs (50), home runs (12) and stolen bases (18). He is tied for first on the team with 46 RBI and is second on the squad with 74 hits ... Davidson leads the Trojans in hits (78) and triples (5) and is second on the team with 14 thefts.
ARIZONA (33-23 Overall, 12-12 Pac-10, 5th Place)
Arizona has reached the 30-win plateau for the fourth time under head coach Jerry Stitt's five-year tenure ... The Wildcats are at or near the top of several Pac-10 statistical categories. The team is first in slugging percentage (.476), hits (655), triples (29) and total bases (982) and are second in batting (.318), runs (436), RBI (387), home runs (54) and saves (16) ... Senior 1B Ernie Durazo had a Pac-10 best 28-game hitting streak earlier this season. He led the 'Cats in batting average (.395), runs (66), hits (94) and on base percentage (.469). He also ranks first in the Pac-10 in runs and doubles (23) and second in hits and total bases (146) ... Junior RF Shelley Duncan owns every Arizona home run record. Earlier this year he became the Wildcats' all-time career home run leader. Recently, the team MVP, knocked out his league leading 24th homer to set Arizona's single-season record ... Freshman pitchers Marc Kaiser, Chris Goodman and Sean Rierson have been the nucleus of the Wildcats staff. They have a combined record of 18-12 with 177 strikeouts in 261.1 innings pitched ... Arizona State lost to Cal State Fullerton and Texas Tech and were eliminated from the tournament ... Senior C Casey Myers was the only Sun Devil named to the All-Regional Team. Myers hit .625 (5-for-8) in the regional with a double, home run, four runs scored and three RBI. Myers earned his second consecutive Pac-10 Player of the Year honor. Myers paces the Sun Devils in runs (53), hits (88), home runs (7), RBI (69), total bases (126) and on base percentage (.488). He ranks in the Pac-10 in batting average (.395, t2nd), on base percentage (2nd), runs (6th), hits (4th), RBI (2nd) and walks (37, t2nd). He finished his Sun Devil career as No. 2 in the ASU and Pac-10 record books for career RBI. His total is 275 ... The Sun Devils finished out the regular season strong, winning six of their last seven Pac-10 games. The team won 11 of their last 15 games ... The squad had an 11- game winning streak from Feb. 1- 17, longest in the Pac-10 this season ... ASU won over 30 games for the 39th straight year ... Head coach Pat Murphy led his team to the postseason for the fourth time in the last five years. Murphy notched his 100th Pac-10 victory against Washington, May 11 ... The Sun Devils are quite the offensive force in the Pac-10. The squad ranks first in the Conference in batting (.327), RBI (432), on base percentage (.431), stolen bases (111) and walks (309). The team also rank in these categories: runs (436, 2nd), hits (669, 2nd), doubles (127, 2nd), triples (18, t2nd), slugging percentage (.454, 4th) and total bases (931, 3rd) ... ASU is a terror on the base paths as evidenced by its five Sun Devils with at least 10 steals. Four of those players have over 15 steals. Junior CF Chris Duffy led the team with 20 thefts on the season ... Freshman DH/OF Rod Allen was ASU's best hitter this season with a .389 average. He also led the Sun Devils in...... He became the first ASU freshman to ever earn All-Pac-10 honors ... Junior RHP Andy Torres ended the season with a 13-... record. His 13 victories are the most for a SUn Devil since 1990 ... With 23 appearances out of the bullpen, senior LHP Drew Friedberg emerged as one of ASU's most dependable closers. He led the team in ERA
(1.88) and opposing batting average (.203) and has 54 strikeouts in 52.2 innings pitched ... ASU broke an NCAA record on Apr. 7, of not having been shut out in 350 consecutive games. The streak is currently at 375 games. During the streak the Sun Devils have been limited to scoring only one run just 10 times ... CALIFORNIA (34-25 Overall, 14-10 Pac-10, T-3rd Place)
California was eliminated from its regional at Baton Rouge, La. by Virginia Commonwealth ... Senior RF Rob Meyer played well at LSU. He batted .500 (6-for-12) with three home runs, a stolen base, three runs scored and seven RBI. In Cal's 9-3 win over Minnesota he went 3-for-4 with two round-trippers... Cal's 33 wins were its most regular season wins since 1995. The Bears closed out their season winning seven of their last eight games and seven of nine Pac-10 contests ... Cal head coach David Esquer earned his first Pac-10 Coach of the Year honor. In his second season at the helm of the Cal program, Esquer led the Bears to their first postseason appearance since 1995. He has compiled a 59-53 record, 25-23 in Pac-10 play ... The Bears won four Pac-10 series this season, one better than last season's three. The squad also swept three series this season, including two against Pac-10 teams (Washington/UCLA) ... Junior 2B Carson White was the only Bear selected to the All-Pac-10 team. White batted .338 and led the Bears in doubles (19), triples (4) and was second on the team with 49 RBI. He ranks in the Pac-10 in slugging percentage (.564, 9th), doubles (t4th), triples (t6th) and total bases (127,7th) ... Meyer led the team with a .355 batting average and senior 1B Clint Hoover ended the regular season on a 10-game hitting streak. He led the Bears with 11 home runs ... Last season's Bears staff had a 5.69 ERA. This year, Cal's pitching is third in the Conference with a 4.29 ERA ... Freshman LF Brian Horwitz had a school-record 23-game hitting streak from Feb. 9-Mar. 25. During that time he hit .385 (37-for-96) with 12 doubles, a triple, home run and 12 RBI ... Senior RHP David Cash has been impressive for the Bears with six starts in 28 appearances. He led the team in wins (10) and was second in strikeouts (91). Cash has a 3.77 ERA and 24-7 career mark as a Bear ... Freshman closer Matt Brown has been strong out of the bullpen. He leads the Pac-10 with eight saves on the season ... Final Leaders: Batting average - Meyer (.355), hits - Meyer/White (76), doubles, triples, total bases, slugging percentage - White (19, 4, 127, .564), runs - Fr. 3B Conor Jackson (50), home runs, RBI - Hoover (11, 54), stolen bases - Horwitz (11), ERA, opposing batting average - Sr. RHP Andrew Sproul (3.60, .235), wins, strikeouts - Cash (10, 94), innings pitched - Jr. RHP Trevor Hutchinson (114.2), saves - Brown (8).
OREGON STATE (31-24 Overall, 11-13 Pac-10, 6th Place)
The Beavers notched at least 30 wins for the fourth time in the past six seasons ... OSU's 11 Pac-10 wins are the most since the Conference united the Northern and Southern Divisions in 1999. The Beavers improved their overall record by three games and their Pac-10 by two games over their final 2000 mark ... Several single- season OSU records were broken this season. Sophomore 3B Brian Barden set a new record for at-bats (226) and hits (83). Senior DH Curtis Davis set a new hit by pitch record (14) and senior LHP Scott Nicholson set thesingle-season record for innings pitched (130.2). Sophomore 1B Andy Jarvis set a single-game record for home runs (3) ... The Beavers also set new records for home runs in a game (7) and hits in a season (618) ...Nicholson is 11-2 with a 3.58 ERA. His 11 wins tie him for the second-most wins ever in a season by an OSU pitcher. His 10 complete games are the most for a Beaver pitcher since 1994. He led the Pac-10 in innings pitched (130.2) ... Final Leaders: Batting average, slugging percentage - So. LF Chris Biles (.395, .605), runs, hits, RBI, total bases - Barden (51, 83, 55, 122), doubles - Jr. RF Josh Carter (18), home runs - Jarvis (12), stolen bases - Sr. CF Eric Stark (10), wins, innings pitched, opposing batting average - Nicholson (11, 130.2, .273), strikeouts - Sr. RHP Thad Johnson (87).
UCLA (30-27 Overall, 9-15 Pac-10, 7th Place)
The Bruins hit the 30-win mark for the third straight year and fifth time in the last six seasons with a 3-1 win over Arizona State in Tempe last weekend ... UCLA struggled in Pac-10 play, but put together a .667 (20-10) winning percentage against non-conference foes. The Bruins also knocked off a No. 1 ranked team three times this year ... UCLA was led offensively by senior DH Brian Baron, who is tops on the team in batting (.443), hits(105), RBI (47), total bases (128), slugging percentage (.540) and on base percentage (.487). He is the seventh Bruin to ever collect 100 hits in a season. Baron's batting average is also good for first in the Conference and is48 points higher than the Pac-10's second-best hitter. He also ranks in the Pac-10 stats in on base percentage (3rd) and total bases (6th) ... Senior 2B Josh Canales ended the season on a 23-game hitting streak. Canales, along with sophomore RF Ben Francisco, led the team with 15 stolen bases. He was second among the Bruins in batting average (.376) and hits (80) ... Final Leaders: Batting average, hits, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage, on base percentage - Baron (.443, 105, 47, 128, .540, .487), doubles - Francisco (20), triples - Jr. LF Adam Berry (2), home runs - Sr. 1B Eric Reece (10), ERA - Fr. RHP Mike Castillo (2.25), strikeouts - Jr. RHP Josh Karp (92).
WASHINGTON (29-23 Overall, 7-17 Pac-10, 8th Place)
The Huskies won at least 26 games for the sixth consecutive season and 11th time in the last 12 years ... Washington is three wins better than last season's overall record of 26-30 ... Two seniors, 2B Marc Rittenhouse and RHP Jeff Carlsen finished out fine Husky careers last weekend. Rittenhouse knocked out a home run in his final collegiate at bat, jumping into the Washington top-10 list for career home runs. He stands tied in ninth place with 19 career round-trippers. Rittenhouse is also fifth in Husky history in runs scored (163) and walks (109). Carlsen battled injuries this season, but finished first in the Husky record books in career starts (47) and career innings (283.1), second in career victories (24) and third in career strikeouts (221) ... Junior RHP Shawn Kohn was one of the brightest spots on the Washington pitching staff. Kohn's season ERA of 2.57 was the best by a Husky starter since 1993. He recorded a 6-2 mark with 65 strikeouts on the season ... Final Leaders: Batting average, on base percentage - Rittenhouse (.375, .454), hits, home runs, total bases, slugging percentage - Jr. INF Michael Done (65, 7, 101, .532), runs, triples, stolen bases - So. SS Tila Reynolds (42, 3, 10), doubles, RBI - So. LF Jay Garthwaite (17, 46), ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched - Kohn (2.57, 65, 80.2).
WASHINGTON STATE (15-39 Overall, 6-18 Pac-10, 9th Place)
The Cougars placed one player on the All-Pac-10 team, while three others received honorable mention recognition. Sophomore 1B Stefan Bailie was selected All-Pac-10 after pacing the Cougars in nearly all offensive statistical categories. He ranked among Pac-10 stat leaders in runs scored (55, 4th), RBI (56, 6th), home runs (18, 2nd) and total bases (139, 3rd). With his 24 home runs this season, he has 30 in his career and sits at seventh in the all-time Cougar record books ... Junior 2B Bookie Gates, junior CF Evan Hecker and senior RF Mike Knight were named honorable mentions ... Knight finished out his Cougar career in style, hitting a double against Stanford in his final at bat ... Final Leaders: batting average, runs, hits, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage, on base percentage - Bailie (.352, 55, 74, 18, 56, 139, .662, .438), doubles - Gates (16), stolen bases - Gates, Knight (8), saves - Sr. RHP Donny Davis (3), strikeouts - Jr. RHP Zach Fisher (53).
